Anyone have a Procharged 496 HO?

I'm planning on installing a Procharger on my 2003 496 HO. It's in a 2003 27' Fountain Fever II with a Bravo I. Before I start the project, I was hoping to get some feedback from owners who have the Procharged 496 HO setup regarding any or all of the following:

1) Are you using the 3lb or 5lb boost model?
2) How difficult was the install? Who did the install?
3) What additional work/parts were required outside of what was included in the Procharger kit?
4) How much tuning had to be done after the install? Who did the tuning?
5) Did you upgrade your drive? If not, how is it holding up?
6) How much did you increase prop pitch after the install?
7) Have you had any problems with the Procharger setup to date?
8) And of course, how many m.p.h. did you pick up at cruise and on the top end?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Procharger

1)I have the 5lb kit
2)The install was fairly easy. The only problem was the spacers for the new injector. They were to long and the injectors leaked.
3)The other big problem was that the fix for the map sensor that Procharger kept telling me to use never worked. Before the Procharger I had Dustin Whipple put a Stage 2 program in my 555 ecm. I had to send it back to him to have the high limit switch removed for my MAP sensor. No problems after that.
4) I did nothing to my stock Bravo drive other than a drive shower and installed a single sidewinder stabilizer.
5) No problems with the 496. I started with a Stage 2 program from Whipple then 100hp Nitrous kit, ran 10 bottles through it with no problems then installed the Procharger kit last year mid summer. Still holding up well. I am changing to Mobil1 15w-50 this year in my engine.
6) Props I went from a 24 bravo (stock) to a 28 bravo (stock)
7) Without my nitrous and the 24 I would turn 4900 at around 68mph and now with the 28 at 5000 I am around 80mph.

I have the 3# system, on a 496HO. I have the stock brovo1X drive with drive shower and tie -in hyd. steering. I installed myself around 16hrs. good manual. I was just slow.I routed my return fuel line back to tank not to sep. and replaced the thermostat with whipples 140 degree. 24 brovo to labbed 28brovo around 12mph on a 28ft. v-hull. Have 50hrs. on charger no problems.

FAST ENOUGH,

I can't thank you enough for the info!!!

How did you fix the spacers for the injectors? How much for the MAP sensor limit removal by Whipple? What was Procharger's recommended fix? Would you recommend the Stage 2 program?

BTW, what type of boat are you running?

Thanks again.

1stfntn 02-06-2004 07:08 PM

daveb,

Thanks for the reply.

My recollection is that the 3.5lb kit doesn't require injector replacement, is that correct? Would you recommend the 140 degree thermostat from Whipple?

Thanks again for the info.

FAST ENOUGH 02-06-2004 07:10 PM

I would do the stage 2 and have him remove the MAP high limit switch ahead of time. The stage 2 also helps with safety. It raises your RPM to 5450 and does some other things that I cannot remember. I never run that high but that way I know I will not create an issue under boost. The fix from prochager was to put a 1 way check valve on the MAP sensor so when under boost it would just blow out the valve. If I had the money I would have just went with the Whipple Supercharger. I got a deal to good to pass up on a Prochager that was on a engine for about 15 hours. I am running a 2002 Checkmate 240ZT.

FAST ENOUGH 02-06-2004 07:11 PM

I forgot to tell you about the spacers!!! I just cut them down about a 1/4in.

FAST ENOUGH 02-06-2004 07:13 PM

When I got my stage 2 kit it came with a 120 degree stat. I did not know about a 140.

Use the 120. Just check the oil temp and make sure it gets hot enough 210-220 min. 240ish hottest. Greg

CFD5 has one on a 25 Outlaw...check out this link, it might help you, or maybe PM him. Thanks

353 fastec
1)5lb kit
2)pulled 1 motor (no big deal)
3)some fittings
4) you have to spend some time(we did)
5)no (changed lube to Redline)
6) 28-34 (32 might work better?)
7)no, works great
8)10-12

Sorry that is a 120 degree therm. from whipple, the 3# sys. uses the stock injectors. I was having problems with temp. alarm. The therm. is worth the money. It stopped the alarm and makes the engine run better, cooler air charge and less chance for detonation.

Fast Enough,

Did you have to do any cutting on your back seat or floor to fit the ProCharger?
I'm looking at installing the 5# kit on my 2001 240ZT with the 486HO motor.
How does your ZT handle 80MPH?
Anyone else have a CPU or MAP sensor problem with either the 3.5 or 5lb. kit?
I know the 5lb. kit comes with new injectors. will this make idle too rich?
Thanks for the help.

BHOCKETT 03-14-2004 08:34 PM

ttt
Just want to keep this alive.
I want to order a kit but I'm waiting for some feedback.
Any HELP?

I ran a 3.5lb ProCharger on a Sunsation 288 496HO. I had to notch my seat back to clear a 90 degree inter-cooler fitting in the front of the cooler. I did not have any map sensor problems with my setup. As FastEnough indicated, Procharger uses a check valve to bleed boost before the MAP. Mine worked fine. No idle problems what-so-ever. I did have Whipple reprogram the ECU after about a month just for piece of mine and to try and eek a little extra performance out of it.

I would have no problems doing it again.

Yes, you do have to cut into the back of your seat and the hatch to make room for the intercooler and supercharger. This was the hardest part of the install. And no it does not run too rich.

BHOCKETT 03-15-2004 08:28 PM

Fast Enough,
Do you have any pics of what you had to cut? It looks like the bottom seat needs the back wall changed to clear the pulley, but the back seat/hatch looks like it will clear. That may change my mind about the install. If you have any pics please e-mail me @ [email protected]
So far the best price was from superchargers 4 less.
How does your Mate handle at 80?
Hydromotive or Bravo1?
Your help will be highly appreciated.

I will send you what I have but they are pretty ulgly. Because it was alot of testing before the finished product. The 240ZT hadles well at 80 with the steering stabilizer and a stock 28" bravo prop. Our back bottom seat will unscew from the floor and the sides and come out complely to do the work. I will email you what I have.

BHOCKETT 03-16-2004 07:15 PM

Fast Enough,
Thanks for the pics.
I already have my back seat out for a stereo upgrade and said to myself "self, what a perfect time to put a ProCharger on". But after seeing what you have to do to that back seat hatch I'll have to find a better way to get a few MPH's.
My plan was to take it off when I sell this boat in a year or two and put it on the next. Don't think the next owner would like that hole in there. Also if my wife were to catch me cutting the back seat, my nuts would be hanging from a tree!!! Married life isn't it great.
Did you see any gain from the stage 2 program from Whipple?
What N.O.S. did you have and would you be willing to part with it?
Thanks again,
Brian

FAST ENOUGH 03-16-2004 07:23 PM

It does look way better now. I will try to send you some new picks when I can take some. But it is way worth it. But I would go with the whipple kit it would probably be less of a headache. The stage 2 kit is worth it for the mag but not really noticeable on the ho.
