minor gel coat repair? small chips etc...
 

I have a few pencil eraser sized chips in my gel coat. One is from a screw going thru the hull when I was mounting my amp...Dumbass!
What is a good way to repair these spots? What products are available to fill these chips and then what to use to try and match the paint? Would some type of epoxy work to fill and then a car touch up paint to match the color? Thanks for any suggestions. J.

West Marine has a Gel repair kit. I used it before with great results. There are 3 gel colors in it you can mix for different colors.

I've seen it at WalMart, too.

take some 220-320 grit paper and sand a little around the chip area for adhesion, then mix up gelcoat with hardner spread in the chip area. let it dry hard and then take a sanding block and 400 grit sand paper and sand flat, switch aver to 600 grit then finally switch to 1000-1200 grit. then use a rubbing compound to bring luster back and finish with polishing compound. as long as the gel coat is reasonable close in color it will be hard to detect the repair.

This sight is awesome! Thanks for all your help everyone. I found the gel coat repair kit at our local CarQuest auto parts store. They carry the Evercoat brand of products, so I had them order the kit. It was $22.00. Not bad. It'll take awhile to mix the right color, but I'm pretty good with that kind of stuff.

if you use gel make sure you use gel paste, this stuff is thick and will not run like the liquid gel coat

I looked at the spectrumcolor as well. I would have gone that way if they would have had a match to my VIP. I did get some good info off of their web sight though. Thank you.
As far as the kit being in gel or gel paste, I don't know. It is whatever Evercoat makes. Hopefully I can put a shop light on it while it is drying so that it doesn't run much. Keep in mind, these spots are about the size of a pencil eraser. hopefully it won't be too difficult.

if it wants to run put some on wax paper and stick the glob on the chip paper and all. after it drys pull paper off your sanding and buffing wont matter. nomally if you were a shop you would use cavisel (spelling) its like flour for resin, thickens it up. but the wax paper will work for what your doing. if it still has a crater in it after it gets hard, just sand it and add more gel.
