malstrom 32
Anyone with info on the maelstrom 32 ft cat, would be helpfull. My close buddy has bought a 1989 32 maelstrom with 3 - 2.5's offshore sport mercs. After the first ride in it she porposed on us at 5 grand and it takes all the trim down to stop it but it naturly slows down. But the engines {outside} appear to be to low and the engine's bottom cowlings are pushing water and low enough not to be able to be trimmed out much at all before hitting the transom. my first comment to my buddy was stern was to deep in water? The boat has no tabs, and lower unit fin.s sit about 9 inches below the bottom.
All input is greatly appreciated. |
The measurement for the lower units is from center of prop shaft to the bottom of the boat. The center motor will of course be different. Back in the day those malstorm hulls ran very well. When your Buddy gets that boat sorted out I think he will be happy. What props are on that boat? A malstrom 32 hull with 3 omc formula1 outboards held the open class speed record at one time. Over 130mph if my memory serves me correct.

I have a 32 Maelstrom with two SBC 800hp Blower Motors. The boat is sloppy until about 55mph and then it starts packing air and rides nice.I am still dialing in but I hope to see about 100mph.The stern sits low.I am running Kaama surface drives with 28X17.5 four bladed props.
|
fishead What is the beam on your boat? Do you have any idea of what the weight is?
|
The beam is 10ft and the qeight is about 8000lbs.I am running Kaamas witht the twin disc 502 Tranny.I am running SBC's from Troy Dennis(I got them from somebody in NJ,Jim Miller) great engines. In am messing with the gearing in the outdrives.I am going with a 13% over drive to start. That may be too steep with the prop I am running. It only takes about an hour per side to change gears.I have sets that will take me to 13% under,8% under,8% over and 13% over.I might as well start high and work down to get to the power range of the motors.I am going to call the cam company and see exactly what Rpm range I need to be in.
|
fishead I am friends with Jim and Jean. Keep us informed of your progress. 8000# seems a little heavy for a 32' Those boats ran very well in the day.
|
Thanks for your replies, the 32 were playing with has a beam of 10 ft.The prop shafts are within a half inch of being even with the bottom.there are no planes or tabs on it ,putting tabs on, puts them right in the flow of nose cones.
Fishead ::::: our 32 has 3 2.5's where are your fuel tanks. |
It4supr You did not mention what props that boat is using. Does that rig have any set back on the motors.
You could add ballast weight in the bow but that would not stop the porpoise. Maybe a wedge in the tunnel if nothing else works. |
Hey thanks .
The imput is helpfull, thanks .The engines are on power lift brackets{manual} and only set back a inch or more off the transom. As far as the Props, i cant to them now, as i'm back to sea. But once again thanks to all who have given us input. keep on going . |

I have three tanks. It looks like a 100gallon between the engines and I think but not sure the sizes of the others.I think they are 75gallon each and they are on the sides in even with the floor and are located betwwen the front and back seats.I have to transfer fuel from the saddle tanks to the main tank in order to be burned.

HI all just got home from work the other day,and played on maelstrom yesterday.
I checked the props and they are some kind of a chopper prop with a 32 pitch. at 5300 rpm the boat is running 63 mph and porpoiseing and thats as fast as it will run. any ideas ? |
It4supr Well at 63mph something is wrong. First you need many more RPM. About 7000. I don't think the choppers are for you . They will make the boat porpoise. Three blade cleavers will work. Something like 15''x28 to start. That boat should be running in the 90s easy. You might want to have the motors checked to see if they are healthy. The prop shaft centerline should be about 1'' above the bottom to start, raise them a little at a time and eye on your water pressure.

My neighbor has one of these boats with triple V8 Evenrudes (300's) and the boat does porpoise. He bought it when Michael Peter’s worked there and had just left for Cigarette. Hull is an 87’ I believe.
It’s not the fastest boat in the world, mid to high 80’s. The boat is not light, but the beam makes for a comfortable ride and the seating capacity is refreshing for a cat boat. It’s true a Doctor owned one of these that went 130 ish. It was not a heavy pleasure boat by any means though. A tunnel tab might help the porpoise if you only ran two engines. The same boat dropped nearly 10 mph when they tried two vs. three engines. They are a good cruising boat that can be had relatively cheap (My neighbor wants like $50K for the boat on the Myco trailer with all spares and such) and can hold a lot of stuff and people. Boat is no longer legal at Tahoe (Two Strokes) so he wants to move on. |
Rik and mmwalters.
thanks for the imput. We have raised the outboard side engines up to just a bit above the bottom. And middle one down 3 inches. I ran it today and just let it do its thing at 64 mph until the owner got nervous. Instead of backing down,i hit the trimed out more waiting for it to porpoise worse ,but instead it jumped up to 87 and had just started to settle back down a bit when i ran out of sea room. While raising the middle engine i noticed the middle prop is a 30 p instead of the others at 32 p. ? Rik does your friends cat have tabs or planes on it . We were thinking that putting tabs on it might serve us well at cruising speeds. My buddy has about 35,000 into it with new paint and interior, alum trailer 99 model and engines are well and 2000 models with little time on them. lt4supr |
Yes he has K-planes on the boat, the longer 380's I believe.
He runs the chopper 3 Blade Mach propellers, might have something to do with the speeds it reaches or lack there of but as stated, the boat is not legal at Tahoe so it sits in a warehouse for the past few years with his other boats. The boat is not the lightest as stated. This one has a ton of storage room; from the deck to the cockpit he utilized the most out of the boat so that there was adequate room for everything. It has a large sun pad aft of the cockpit as well. |
Thanks Rik
A shame about it sitting. yup thats the boat all open nothing,I dont spend much time on recreational boats but my own, but have another friend that runs a 50 nortech and building a second one .But are work loads are too different so i dont get much time on it. Family lives on lake there and i 'm in the bay area when in the west. I have found that this boat did take a few trophys in it time . thanks for the replys again lt4supr late four supper |
My buddy has a 89 32' malstrom setup for 3 Johnson 300's. Have 2 looking for 3rd with same offshore style setup. Do you guys know anywhere to look?
