need a new valve spring manufacture...
Well I gave crane a second chance this year and they let me down. last year I had one broke valve spring after 85 hrs, thought is was a fluke. Well i just tore apart my heads from my motor this year and found more broken springs. These were double spring w/damper. I always had great oiling, oil temp was always under 200*. What would cause this ****. These springs only had 45 hrs and under 5500 rpm.
I need to find a new spring manufacture that i can trust. What do you reccommed :D Thanks Travis |

Generally, if you use the higher installed height on the spec sheet, and then subtract the max lift for the spring you get the minimum running height (open) of the spring. Some people shim to a higher pressure on the seat (lower installed height) and then still run a cam right up against the max recommended lift. This puts the spring at a lower open height than recommended. Believe me, these last few thousandths make all the difference in the world.
The best thing you can do for your springs is to ran as LONG of a spring as you can. Cut your seats lower if your heads will allow. Run +.100 over valves. Run +.050 retainers. Then get springs setup for whatever installed height you get to. H11 "toolroom" springs are wonderful, but I keep seeing people talk about running them and the wimpiest one they offer has 165 pounds on the seat. That's at 1.900 installed. That same spring would be 140 pounds at 1.940 which would be good on a BBC. Dunno what you'd have to do to get a spring that long on a SBC. |
Travis I have been cking allot on this and the Isky's are the best. Dwight
ps. What types of parts do you have laying around? D |
I would have some pics but OSO won't let me post pics  I had 5 springs that were broke. On 4 the inner spring was broke and on one the outer big spring was broke.
The spring i used was installed height of 1.968". I had setup the heads myself. The setup had a total of .670" lift if memory serves me right. I was only running .598" lift. I can't even remember what i had used. Like +.150" longer valves or somethin  i am checking my part number right now to see if I had used the .050" + retainers. and this is a small block ofcourse it just thinks its a big block ;) :D Thanks for the info mcollinstn travis |
Whitey.. Thanks bro. i will have to look into isky :)

I have always used K-MOTION. I have never had a spring break nor did I ever experience a "pull-thru"

Crane
My Crane valve springs lasted 30 hours, broke 1 internal spring & killed the the Rocker arm. HP 500. Just switched to Comp 929 springs & Comp Pro Magnum rockers. Heard they were good & they were available at my local parts store.
