Need Help With Merc O/b Trim Assmbly
I cant find what to fix on my trim assembly. When I come into a wave hard my stbd engine kicks up. It trims up and down fine, holds trim at any position and holds when you power up. But if you hit it with static load it kicks up.
I did re-seal the pump/motor and tilt ram. I am thinking of replacing the port (left) ram with the check valve but I have no idea if that is the real problem. Thanks in advance for any input. Brad |

Whatcha got?
Which style of trim? Double ram external pump (pump inside boat)? Single ram on pivot bracket w external pump? Single ram comp style mounted thru transom w external pump? Double "pusher fingers" and single tilt ram w integrated pump? |
mmwalters,
Thanks I took your advice and posted over there no joy yet. McCollin, The last one. This is a stock 97 250 EFI, I thought about changing the check valve in the port trim ram but the more I read and think about this I'm ready to go with a new pump. I'm thinking the up pilot valve in the pump is bad and releases at too low of pressure. I don't know tough. I would hate to buy a $400.00 part and not fix the problem. Brad |
Have you checked the oil in it? Could be aerated oil allowing it to be "spongy". Watery oil can do the same. So can air in the system, but those are usually self bleeding (as long as the lube level is up to where it is supposed to be).

Merc had a problem w/ cleaning out the main housing after it was machined. Alot of metal filings were floating around, some getting under pilot check valves and check balls/springs. Also may be a dislodged memory piston check ball/spring (impact protection system).Check manual release valve too, make sure its screwed in all the way (strd. side of saddle).

Thanks for the great responses,
Maybe I should tear it apart and put it back together again. The fluid is new, the seals in the tilt ram are new, the manual release and associated o-rings are new. I had a previous problem with a dislodged ball, all of those are fine. I'm just whish I new what was wrong so I could replace/fix it. Thanks again, Brad |
