It looks like a SSM IV or SSM V,... if you post the serial number I can tell you which one. I have the workshop manual.

Thanks ...but i do not have the serial number handy. I was thinking the same though...a 4 or 5.

Looks like a #5 w/ 2 inch spacer.

Here is the profile of a SSM II... you be the judge....

Here is the profile of the MC SSM IV or SSM V... again... you decide.....

You can tell the difference between 4 and 5 by the size of the pin that holds the lower trim ram. The pin goes all the way across the bottom of the gimble and holds both trim rams. If it is 7/8 inch thick then it is probably a 5. If it is smaller, it is a 4. Also, the prop shaft size will usually tell you but some of the #4's have had their shaft size upgraded. If it a small shaft then it is definately NOT a 5.

Agreed on the 2 inch spacer.

I think I got all this straight.

Notice the short cavitation plate and the sacrificial anode on the drive in the picture... see how it looks identical to the SSM IV profile? The drive does appear to have a spacer installed... you can see the place where the rams were installed... :eureka:

looks like there are 2 places for the ram locations

jody165 03-16-2004 06:36 PM

I was referring to the front mounting location where the ram attaches to the gimble. You are referring to the rear ram mounting location where it attaches to the lower unit (or in this case the 2 inch spacer).

Jody, close on the pin, the V has a 1" pin, the IV has a 7/8. Marinetrans is right on the money, 2" spacer (he normally is). Hard to tell from a photo, but looking at the prop it almost looks like the prop hub is the same OD as the washer, if so that hub will only fit a small shaft making it a IV like you said but it is really hard to tell from the picture.

I stand corrected on the actual dimentions. But larger pin is #5 and smaller is #4. At least I had that right :-)

Thanks for the clarification. I think you were the one who told me this in the first place anyway.

Thanks for all the input! This drive is on a boat I'm looking at. I will ask them to check the size of the propshaft for me.

Thanks again!
