Mercury Prop WARNING!!

Mercury has issued a service bulletin regarding failures (throwing blades) on ALL Mercury props!!. Warranty period is one year only.
Even a drawing was issued as to where to look for surface blemishes or cracks (at the blade root)....
Seems now Merc is in the same boat as Hydromotives throwing blades.

marinetrans 03-17-2004 08:30 PM

Being a servicing center for propellers we have heard our share of client experiences. But you have to remember that some blade failures are due to improper finishing after they have left the manufacturers.

Bravo's don't like high X dimensions either...labbed or not.

Are you saying I can prevent those cracks by lab finishing my new props?

¤%{£{¤#%¤ I have agressive X-dim too, I'm toasted!!!

Threw a blade on a labbed 30 this fall. Mercury Racing replaced it without question.

jdnca1 03-18-2004 09:20 AM

They live....for a while...;)

38KV 03-18-2004 09:22 AM

I have to face it.

I'm going to spend the summer throwing Bravoblades

throttleup 03-18-2004 10:06 AM

There are some areas on a Bravo 1 prop that are just waiting for a crack to start. These areas can be quickly finished to reduce the possibility of a crack. The downside is that any work done to the props will void the warranty.

The reason that lab props sometimes last longer than stock is that these areas are usually finished through the lab finish process.

Could one of you that have received the bulletin with the drawing post the drawing for us. I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Rick

Crossing WAY too many bridges before you get there!Enjoy your boat ,IF something happens, then fix it,not before. You're welcome,Dr. Phil

What a nice guy! thanks Dr. Phil :)

HUSTLEthis 03-18-2004 02:00 PM

Is this including ssm props

blown formula 03-18-2004 02:24 PM

It is my understanding that it covers ALL props-
2.5 hp outboards clear up thru 525SC's...Alpha's, Bravo's, Mirage, etc- everything!!

Does anyone have a Phone # for Merc. service, or web address where one could review the service bulletin?

eyezlee 03-19-2004 02:45 PM

Is this a product safety bulletin to keep them from being sued? A blanket statement to cover their ass?

Do they also have a bulletin that says their engines and outdrives break too?

Strip Poker 388 03-19-2004 05:16 PM

I lost a blade last year figured they would say tuff sh*t. Just bought another one:mad: I still have the old NEW prop. Its been over a year now though.

blown formula 03-19-2004 07:45 PM

 ... yeah, the funny thing is the defect causing the thrown/broken blades (per Merc bulletin) is due to casting voids in the blade root at the hub..... looks to me like "defective materials & workmanship" and should be covered.
There has to be a metalurgical test to "proof" castings before machining begins....??????

IRONMAN 03-20-2004 01:16 AM

I cat scan all my props before they go on the shaft that way you know where all of the imperfections are. Rods and cranks get the CT scan also:D :D it is not rocket science.
