GEN IV 454 Oil pan
I need to replace the oil pans on my '87 454 420hp motors, GEN IV blocks. They are approx. 7 quart, and have the trap doors in them. There are no #'s stamped that I could find. Engine serial #'s start with A39xxxxx, and the Merc pan # is 13800 at $262 a piece.
Can I just use a GM truck or Corvette pan instead of buying them from Mercury? The Merc pan is just a relabeled GM pan I assume, since they don't do anything marine to the pan that I am aware of. I just don't know what GM # to order unfortunately as there are no #'s. Just trying to save a couple $$. Any ideas? |
You could use an automotive pan... the only difference I've seen between marine and automotive is powder coating inside and out on marine pans... and a heavier windage tray to keep exploding parts from going through the pan and hull....:eureka:

pans
Jaybird,
I've got a set of mercury cast aluminum pans I bought and no longer plan on using.I sell them for $300 for the pair with dip sticks. [email protected] Bob |
Ive got one of the Mark 4 Merc trap door pans I bought from another member and didnt use. $50 plus shipping.

Will both of the above pans fit exactly, and have the same capacity as mine? I just don't want to get the wrong one...thanks.

Re: Re: pans
Originally posted by sutphen30 thats a great deal,i'd buy them if i didn't have gen 6 blocks.you want the chevy truck pan,i pay about $100 for them, sorry i don't have the p/n handy.if no one posts it i'll get it. Not sure if the Merc cast aluminum pans would fit with my offshore motor mounts, and I really don't want to cut them. |
Im not sure on the aluminum pans but I know the one I have will work cause its the same pan used in the corvets I believe. Im in Brazil right now but if you need to know in a hurry I can try and have the wifey take some pictures and measurements. I think the aluminum pans would work too but the dipsticks come up in a different place. Not trying to get 737 mad but check the classifieds, there is a better price on them aluminum pans. The aluminum pan doesnt have a trap door and need a seperate windage tray. Im running them. If you do go aluminum, there is a trick you need to know about.

Oh, my pans not new but in good shape. I would paint it though. I went aluminum to match my other engine, no other reason.
