bildge cleanup

What are you guys using to clean up the bildge area? I have been using simple green.....just spraying it down there, let it sit, spray off. I'd like something a little stronger. Can't really reach down there and clean it all up so I'm thinking maybe engine degreaser.......heck what about bleach?

GLH 03-25-2004 07:30 AM

Use cowisl he' does a great job, all you have to do is give him a ride after he's done!!!

Kidding, too clean it just use bildge cleaner with a power hose where you can't reach. Also when your running around I usually throw Dawn dish washer if I have water in the bildge it breaks down whatever is in there till I pull the plug at the end of the day.

Dixie Doug 03-25-2004 11:19 AM

We use Superclean

jaybird 03-25-2004 12:57 PM

Believe it or not, some of the actual "bilge cleaner" products work pretty well at breaking down grease. Lestoil is a great oil and grease remover too, probably my all time favorite. Dump it in there with hot water for a couple hours, and then a good hose blasting rinse. I use a product called Veristal for heavy stuff also.

If the filth is beyond that, probably time for a good pressure washing in there.

Lmarth 03-25-2004 01:36 PM

Before winter storage, I've had good luck with spray Gunk. Obviously you need to do this on land and be careful where you dump the Gunk solution. Hose it down to rinse and the bilge looks like new.

Liberator21 03-25-2004 01:52 PM

Castrol Superclean works well.

I ran Palmolive on the lake so the sloshing effect would clean better. Problem is that I had bubbles coming out the bilge blower. :D:D It cleaned it though

Grease Off

97BossHammer 03-25-2004 04:53 PM

think I'll try the castrol superclean....thanks for the input guys.

traviss 03-25-2004 05:03 PM

I use paint thinner. put a gallon or two in :D and take a bath with a tire brush :D wash it out with the garden hose..

mcollinstn 03-25-2004 10:06 PM

Yeah, put in five or ten gallons of water with Simple Green. Take it for a run. Let it slosh for an hour or so. Does real well.

Simple Green and most other cleaners don't work nearly as well at 100% strength. No "carrier" to suspend the emulsified grease in.

Super Clean is hard on bare aluminum.

buck183 03-25-2004 11:17 PM

Superclean here too.

Nordicflame 03-26-2004 08:49 AM

Just use the standard purple stuff at Autozone or the Castrol. Very strong stuff as you can feel when your hands burn. I generally just throw some of the concentrate in the bilge, add some water and drive around on the trailer or water for a while then flush it.
Spotless for $4....
Self cleaning:D :D

Chart 03-26-2004 08:58 AM

If you fill the bilge with soapy water and drive around on the trailer, be careful. Don't fill it real full and then trailer down hills with stop signs at the bottom.

BTW, anyone know a good way to get soapy oily residue out of the cabin carpeting?

Nordicflame 03-26-2004 09:06 AM

I only drive up hill :D ;) :D

97BossHammer 03-26-2004 11:03 AM

good idea guys....I'll throw the ole purple stuff in w/ water...go fill her up w/gas and she should be spotless by the time I get back.

Reed Jensen 03-26-2004 11:13 AM

OK guys... don't laugh... but I've found something that works better than Castrol superclean... doesn't burn your eyes as much.. costs less... and is easy to find... at least for me... it is a Laundry pre-treater... the name of the stuff is "Soilove".... I can buy it for 99 cents for a pint... when you compare it in price to Superclean it's about the same.. $8.00 per gallon. I put it in a spray bottle.. spritz down everything and let it sit for about 10 minutes.. brush....spritz again... wait another 10 minutes..brush... then hit it with a hose... sparkling clean. I even use it to clean engines after they have been removed from cars.

Reed Jensen 03-26-2004 11:30 AM

Before....

Reed Jensen 03-26-2004 11:31 AM

after using only Soilove and water....

JPD Motorsports 03-26-2004 02:38 PM

Superclean or simplegreen little water and a bag of ice or 2 to use as scrubbing power. when melted drain out

homan 03-26-2004 09:24 PM

If you have anything painted with a spray can in there be careful the purple stuff will take the paint off.

I will second that. It left spots on the pulleys on my 500's.

I now use simple green in a sprayer used for spraying weed killer. I dilute it down with water about 50/50 and spray the entire bilge. For getting under the motors I use a duster on a pole used for cleaning ceiling fans in houses. The pole is plastic and flexible and you can get into all the tight spots. You can buy the dusters at Home Depot for a few bucks.

Yes... I"ve seen it at grocery stores... but at a higher price... I didn't use any solvent on the engines... just the laundry pretreater...

Looks like a 3.8 or 4.2 litre Jaguar.

cuda 03-28-2004 04:27 PM

After blowing my transmission line, we had an oily mess in the bilge. We used Greased Lightning and hot water, I couldn't believe how clean it came. I think the hot water was the key. I disconnected the hot water to the washer and connected a hose there.

Close .... but no cigar... Jags have iron blocks and aluminum heads... this engine has an alloy block... but it is English.... I'll give you a bigger hint... like Jaguar... this company is also owned by Ford Motor Company..:D

Reed Jensen 03-28-2004 05:39 PM

Here is what a 3.8 liter Jag motor looks like...

bobbarker 03-31-2004 01:40 AM

bildge

97bosshammer,

I use 1 can of disk brake cleaner, let it set 10 min.
the flush with water , works for me.

bryanspeedracer 03-31-2004 08:43 AM

I used a regular degreaser and a bunch of water. The motors are out so it was wide open. I thought that the idea of filling th bilge with hot, soapy water then drive around the block was a good idea. So, I filled 'er up hooked the truck up and drove to the car wash.
The bilge is squeaky clean and all of the oily water ran right up into the cabin:rolleyes:

What a dummy...

Reckless32 03-31-2004 08:53 AM

I've used Super Clean and a couple of buddies of mine discovered "Purple Power" found at your local Advance Auto to be a spray on; set for a bit; spray off product.

BUT whatever you use, after it has dried out a bit go back in and spray everything down with WD-40 to preserve the surface of all metal areas and help prevent those spots mentioned above.

As another cleaning tip from your local Advance Auto store:
Mequires Tire/Rim cleaner that comes in a clear spray bottle of pinkish liquid. Cheap; effective; easy to use yellow hull cleaner. Just spray on, let sit a couple of minutes and spray off. It doesn't have to necessarily have to say Marine boyz...

I am going to say Austin Martin, possibly out of a DB7. The Jag photo is sweet. The XKE is one of my favorite cars. I just love British and American sports cars. Do you have any picks of a Lotus maybe?

Bingo!... It's an Aston Martin DB6 4.0 liter engine... Sorry... couldn't find any pics of a Lotus... I did some work recently on a very nice Europa ... it was one of the twin cam ford block cars...not a renault engined car.... fast... so small... my knuckles hit the windshield while my hands were on the steering wheel... :D
