Best Earmuffs for Alpha SS

Because the intake area is not flat, I can't get the hose flush earmuffs to seal on my Alpha SS. What works for you?

They don't need to seal 100%, I watch water get past mine but the motor will still get enough to keep cool. Just have someone watch the gauges and another watching to make sure the muffs don't fall off.

Mercury has a set with no clamp but a thin rod that goes thru a intake hole that'll connect one side to the other. Holds alot better than the clampetts and doesn't fall off when you turn on the water

I used to have a flusher for my SS made by a company called "Flush by design" but cannot find the website anymore.

You might check this one made by Bob's Machine Shop.

I used standard muffs on mine.

Use some needle nose vise grips to help it out. Clamped them to the thin leading edge and about 1/2 way on the muff cup. Never sealed off 100% turned the water all the way up.

Had my son watch in case it vibrated off.

Hey Plum,
We always used standard muffs and tied a rope around it so it would seal up better, as you may remember. It worked OK. Just charge the battery and head to the lake!:)

Plum_Crazy 03-27-2004 08:41 AM

Wette, I'd head to the lake, but there's still 2' of ice on it! Besides, I have to work on the nitrous system today. I'm installing a bottle heater and a dash-mount pressure gauge. I'm thinking about changing the name from Plum Crazy to NOStalgic. Do you think it's good?

Plum_Crazy 03-27-2004 08:47 AM

Thanks Hoghead! That looks like the flush kit for me. I'd like to be able to run the boat alone and not worry if the hose fell off.

NOStalgic sounds cool! Go with it!

What kind of HP you pushin and what boat?

homan 03-27-2004 08:26 PM

isn't that one for low water pickuups

I need the flush kit for an Alpha SS. The one pictured above looks like it will work. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I bought this boat from Wette Vette's father. It's an '88 Baja Sunsport 196 with a high-compression 500HP SBC and 150HP nitrous shot. The Alpha SS works because the boat is so light. They ran 82 MPH, 86.5 MPH on 100HP shot of nitrous with a 26P Spinelli prop. I've been trying to enhance it over the winter. It needs more air, so I propped the hatch open 3/4" with rubber stand-offs. That gave me enough clearance to move from an 8X3" FA to a 10X3" FA with some screens removed. I also added a bottle heater and pressure gauge to make sure I'm getting good flow on that nitrous. The boat has sort of a retro look with the metalflake gelcoat and angled lines, so the name Nostalgic seems to fit.

Yes it is. My SS drive had low water pickups...I'm assuming Plum Crazy's does too.

Duct tape ! :D

Plum crazy, I had an alpha SS, all you have to do is go down to the hardware store and pick yourself up a Y fitting for an outside hose bib, then by some, fittings for the Y that screw onto the ends and have a barb fitting for clear plastic hose that fits the water intakes of the Drive. When you put the hose into the intakes put a little tape over them so that the water pressure does'nt push them out. It will probably cost you about 10.00. Used it for years and it worked like a charm.
