some problems twin 454 wellcraft
hello all,
having some problems. seems as thought the engines are cutting out at w.o.t. then catching again and this bounces back and forth from side to side. as thought water in gas? rpms drop then catch up. then jumps to other engine and back. any ideas on this? fuel pumps or water in fuel, maybe electrical issues? the boat is a wellcraft gransport. and not sure what kind of speed i should be getting or max rpm. at current max rpm is 3300. dosent seem right! new to the boating world so please be patient. |
any one got any ideas?

My vote is for blocked fuel tank air vent if:
1. There is one common tank for both engines. 2. It takes a while before it starts. The air vent could be choked by old wax. |
there are two tanks on board. each engine draws from each tank. there is a cross over valve. could both tanks vents be blocked?

Weak fuel pumps.

Your max rpm should be in the 4600-5000 range. Not sure on fixing the problem, ck all elec connections by engines and behind the dash. Has this problem just started? How long have you owned the boat?

Floats in the carbs too high?
|
Take a voltmeter check voltage at ignition switch and back at the engine with it running and at the battery all should be about the same.Fuel pressure at the carb 3 or 4 psi min 2000 rpm 4 or 5 at WFO. Good Luck

great electrical problems. the one and only thing that i love doing. anyway hope it is easy to trace down. just got the boat last year and havent had a chance to really give it a good run. just concerned about how it is running and dont want to have a break down while out in the cold water of lake ontario! LOL i try looking at it tomorrow.

Engines cutting out could be water in the gas or an air leak between the pump and tank. Are the fuel water separators new, are they tight?
Are there fuel selector or shutoff valves. Check to make sure they're open all the way and not leaking air in. As for electrical, that would be odd since it's on both engines. Unless you have an engine synchronizer. Gary |
