Pulley hits new water pump.
Motor is 1982 454/330. Installed a new water pump today and went to bolt on the pulley, but...the pulley hit the water pump.
I placed some washers inside the pulley which gives me about 1/8" clearance and the belt seems to line up, so...can I get away with leaving it like this or do I need a different pulley? Thanks in advance, D. Ocean Pompano Beach, FLA |

dunno, bro...imagine 5000rpm...are we balanced with washers in there? Before installation, I compared the new & old pump side by side. They seemed identical. My only guess is the press-fit flange that the pulley bolts to is pushed 1/8" further down the spline. Hate like hell to disassemble the thing just to have the flange re-positioned. D. You'll know after a few hours, have an extra belt on hand, maybe a few, it will either go fast, slow or not at all, my guess is it will be ok if it eyeballs good. Watch a roll over, that will be a sure sign things are out of line.

It's not that uncommon to get a pump that has the flange positioned wrong.If you still have the old one,measure it.Use a hub puller & pull it forward to where it belongs.Also check to be sure it is not a reverse rotation pump for a serpintine belt drive. Oh,for the good old days when all you had to check for was threaded or unthreaded holes in the casting! If it wants to overheat afterward,then the pump is a reverse rotation. Good Luck, Huffer |
