Another 540 Cam Thread?
I would like to some opinions on my engine builder's choice of cam for a 540 Marine engine.
It is a 9:1, maybe 9.2:1 compression ratio. Using AFR 315cc CNC Ported heads. Also has Dart Big M block, Callies crank, Lunati rods, J&E pistons, Crower rockers. The cam has these specs: 112 LSA 236/240 @ .050 .630/.635 Valve Lift It is a hydraulic roller Comp Cam. Not sure if it's off the shelf or custom grind. Want to use a 1050 Carb with single plane intake and Stainless Marine Long Wet Risers exhaust. Any feed back is appreciated. Thanks, Russ Withiam |
Sounds very close to the 741 and that seems to be the cam of choice for 540s.:eureka:

I built a pair of 540's this past winter that are almost identical to what you're putting together - same block, same heads, same compression ratio, etc. The only difference is that I went with 850cfm marine Holleys on Victor Jr single planes. I used the Crane 741 cam and made ~690hp @5700rpm and ~670ft lbs @4600rpm. You'll probably gain 20-30 hp/tq over that with the Dominator's.

dunno about the wet exhaust. might wanna go dry...
|
what about a good flat tappet Hydraulic??
|
Thanks for the feedback.
Already have the 1050 and the Stainless Marine Exhaust. Dry pipes would be to loud where I boat. Looking at a Victor intake based on what somebody had mentioned, in regards to the ports matching up nicely. Dyno, interesting that you mentioned a hydraulic flat tappet. I really wanted a full roller engine. I would like to hear from the Toilet Doctor. McCollinsTn???????? |
i went the full roller route once before on a 502 I had and didn't think it was worth the extra cost and the maintenance (lash) I really dont try to squeese every hp out of my stuff, whats a good choice for the flat tappet route? there has got to be one....
|
Hydraulic rollers require no more maintenance than a flat tappet hydraulic. They also out perform a flat tappet in all aspects.
Are you reffering to a solid roller? Confused:confused: Dave |
Yes I had full roller....lots of cost in a hydraulic roller set and then do it twice with twins
|
Yes, $800 worth of lifters in your twin case.
I was thinking that RLW was already setup for HRs. ;) |
