Oil Temp Gauge

I am sure this has been covered before in the forum but here goes anyway..
Can I install a oil temp sender in the drain plug location? Has anybody done this or is there a more convenient place to put it.
Thanks
Sheikman

I just welded a bung in the side of the pan. :)

I get my temp from the remote filter bracket. It has a fitting just for this purpose. It reads the oil as it comes out of the pan, before it goes to the cooler.

Mines in the same place as Waterfoul. I used the Idea that was posted a while back. Bought a digital Meat thermometer from K-mart. It goes 0-500 deg. and it has a built in memory. about $12.oo. then I got a 3/8" pipe too 1/8 compresion fitting, and Slid the probe in , and tightened the compretion fitting. works Great! :D You can even bend it to whatever you want for easy viewing.
Total cost ...Less than $20.00. took 10 minutes to install. And with the Memory built into the thermomiter. You can check it any time. ;) Of corse you have to lift the engine hatch. but thats no big deal.
I'm not taking credit for this one. Like I said. I read it here a few months back ;)

yo..foul.. is that the pipe plug in between the two hoses on the remote filter bracket? I am putting one in the Play and it would be faster then welding a bung in my nice new oil pan :D :D :D

Traviss, I don't think it is between the hoses (trying to picture it in my head). I believe it goes like this: From the Pan, thru the hose, thru the filter, past the temp sender, thru the hose and into the cooler.....

.. Your right mike.. I just went out in the barn and dug it outta the big pile of parts. The pipe plug is next to the "IN" hose.. If I can put it in there, that would save me alot of time welding a bung in my oil pan.

Thanks bud

So what's up? Does it work well to put the sender in the oil pan drain plug? Seems like the ideal spot, just before the oil goes back through the system (ie bearings).

The best, and easiest place to put it is in the remote oil filter bracket, AFTER the cooler. It's more important to know the temp of the oil GOING TO the bearings.
If the proper temp is not achieved then you're not getting the proper lubrucation because of viscocity reasons.
