Add extra clutch plates in Merc trans II?
Does anybody know how to install extra clutch plates to a merc trans II tranny? I know Bam Marine does it and Huber as well. I have been experimenting and have tried surface grinding the inner plate but the output gear shaft does not seem to quite line up. Any information would be wonderful. Please email with any info that you might have at [email protected]
Thank You. |

I heard that Mark from Bam Marine does not like to be a phone doctor. Any input?

Don't think the clutch hub is long enough to add more cluches. The output shafts are known to break w/ high HP. They were only made to handle around 350 hp. Years ago we had some out there w/ 625 hp, but the people were very gentle w/ them (no wave hopping or hole shots). Better switching out to a Borg-Warner set up. Also alot of parts are NLA, so don't go grinding and modifing stuff, may not beable to find a good replacment.

I don't think Mark at BAM does, I could be wrong.
I did some checking on this before. Everbody I could find (thru this site) said you can't add clutches. Limiting factor gets to be the shaft. Hey Marinetrans, tell me if I remember correctly: Don't use the bronze or fiber clutches because the merc trans doesn't apply enough pressure to the plates (90 to 105 psi). Once you slip the the fiber clutches glaze and then they are pretty lousy. I was told by several to use the PAPER clutches and marinetrans said add two #10 stainless washers under the control spring to increase pressure relief point. Increases trans pressure by 10-15 psi Additional notes I have for a stronger Merc trans: 1.Cryogenic treat the pump gerator. 2.Slightly clearance gerator keyway so that when the input shaft twists ever so slightly the gerator doesn't split. 3.Give the trans cooler exit its own dump (not thru exhaust). You probably already knew that but now it's all in in one post, right? DS |
You got it Zanie.:D

Hey ,What is the mercruisser part number for the correct drive plate (bolts to flywheel) for the merc trans?
Is it 77480A1 or 860125T? Thanks, DS |
The 860125T drive plate is for a Borg Warner Trans.
The Merc Trans Drive plate is NLA .If You need one I might be able to get you one. P.S. How many teeth on your starter ring gear 153 or 168 ? Rob |
