single back fire on start up
 
454 back fires on start up. one pop at the exhaust silencer. engines are 1988 with carbs.
checked timming and it is at 8 btdc . did i check it right? or is there a proper way to check and or adjust?

is that the only time it backfires? are does it do it after the engine is running? how does it run in the water?

it only does it when you start it up. after it is warm.

If it has a Quadrajet it is likley that the plugs at the bottom of the float bowl are leaking down and the raw fuel is puddling in the intake and then igniting when you start. Do you also have long crank times before starting??

no long cranks. starts as soon as the key is turned. is the carb an easy fix or should i get them rebuilt?
