Re: Advice on a cooling system problem
I have a 1990 Baja 300ES, 365Magnums. I was in my driveway with a set of muffs hooked up to the port bravo 1. I started the engine, however now water was exiting the thru-hull exhaust. I waited until the motor just started to warm up. I believe as soon as the thermostat opened water began to come out of the thru-hulls and everything seemed fine. The marina that winterized it said the same thing happened. I have not started the starboard side yet. What would you attribute the problem to? Thermostat or seawater pump?
Thanks in advance for any advice! Scott |
That was supposed to read "no" water was coming out, not "now" Sorry

I would change the impeller if you did not. An airleak on the supply side of the seapump can cause this. Also I've noticed that when the seapump looses it's prime, like when replacing an impeller, it takes a while to get water flowing again. The best way to insure prime is to remove the intake hose from the transom fitting and stick the garden hose in there. That is best for many reasons, the one you described being one of them.

I would DEF check the impeller ... Same thing happened to my 454's ( water slow to appear out exhaust) ...we found clamps off supply hose to seapump. Thought everything was ok and it wasn't ....ran boat about 30-40 mins motor got hot .....found impeller destroyed ...now might be replacing Motor ....take the time to check the pump ...

As was said, check the impeller. But sometimes the garden hose does not supply enough water to get good flow. You shouldn't let it run too long or at above idle r.p.m. on a hose.

It ran fine off muffs last year, this is why I suspect something is wrong. The last time I had seawater pump on another boat go bad, I heard a squeal first. I have to remove the back seat to get to them, a real chore, sounds like there is no other choice...

Screen ...DOIT ....I thought everything was ok and it might be costing me 10K ....

Ok, ok I bought the impellers and gaskets from Dubberts!
One more thing, the last time I changed impellers on my last Baja, a few of the impeller blades were gone, I checked the other end of the output hose, however they were not there. Where did they go? Hopefully they are not buried in the block somewhere... |
