Tow vehicule advice
I found a really decent deal on a GMC 2500 4x4.
It's got a C6P (heavy duty tow pack, with 4.10 dif.) A pretty clean truck. My only concern is about the wheelbase. It's a REG cab with long bed. Wheelbase is 131.5 inches. I heard a lot of guys claiming that a tow vehicle should at least have a 150 and + wheelbase. Now, considering that the truck will be used to tow 29' and less boats...? Your opinions would be appreciated. Thanks |
Would you think twice pulling that with a 2500 suburban? They are about the length of the truck you're considering.
Havaing had a standard cab truck before though, the lack of room inside becomes a pain in the rear. |

I've towed with an S10 Blazer, a full size Bronco, Supercab F250 longbed, Crewcab F350 longbed, and now a dually Crewcab F350 longbed, in that order. Note that the wheelbase got progressively longer. Longer wheelbase equals stability.
If you can swing it, go with a diesel, too. The torque difference allows your cruise control to be useful. I also prefer a stick with overdrive, but that's just personal preference. With a manual, there's one less thing to overheat. Cheers, Brian |
I'm looking at an Excursion with a V10. How does the V10 work on pulling compared to the diesel? The V10 has a pile of torque.

mike i had a v10 before my power stroke the v 10 works great but it shifts alot on hills and drinks fuel as where the power stroke is much better on fuel and pulls better.

I have a GMC with 131.5.
26 foot boat, twins. No problem. Backs up great. A shorter tow vehicle and longer trailer is good for backing. A longer tow vehicle and a shorter trailer is good for going forward. Ask yourself where do you want the advantage? (You did say that the wheelbase is primary concern.) I will say I like the extended cab, though. |

Now, I just got the 6.0 PSD in a 2004 F-350 Crew Cab SRW and there is a world of difference between this package and the above two. The 6.0 runs VERY strong. For 2005 the V-10 gets the 3 valve engine and the Torq Shift 5 speed auto. That should be a much improved package. |
i tow a 27' scarab (1987 old and heavy) with a gmc 1500 pickup with an extended cab and a shortbed and it has no problem.
I also tow a 20' enclosed race car trailer with it and it does just fine with that too. Made it to florida (from NY)and back over the winter with no problems. |
