40 foot performer how much hp to plane?
 

Hello,I just purchased a 40 ft go fast and wanted to know how much hp the boat will need to plane?I will use the boat for fishing and top speed isnt what im looking for 30-40 mph max.Can i prop way down and run a single?

Why would someone want to waste a boat? A performance hull is not designed to push thru water like a sea of jello. Depending on the x dimension of the 40 footer will depend on how much it will take to get on plane. If you want to run the one engine idea, I suggest a Sterling 1275 and a #6 drive.

I had my 25 blackfin well offshore and got caught in a storm coming in and i had to slow down to 8 mph and wonder if i was going to make it back? The 40 performer i hope is the answer to nasty seas.The boat is 40 ft,24 degree deadrise and was purchased without motors or drives.weigh is around 10000 # ? Id like 35 mph with torque to pull through nasty stuff.I know most of you think this is a waste of a boat but,if you go out and fish alot which i do and mostly offshore which boat would you like in 6-8 ft waves a 25cc or a 40 soon to be cc.?lenght and weight do help in this type of sea.

Bolt a couple of V6 outboards on it. That'll make the best of all worlds, including decent performance and backup motor "protection". You also don't really want to try to handle a 40' 10,000# single engine deep vee around the docks in the wind. Go twins.

If the outboard idea will interfere with hauling your fish in, then stick with twins, but you can go as small as V6 4.3's and still run well enough.

And I seriously doubt your bare hull weighs close to 10,000#. It should be significantly lighter than that.

Hey thanks for your replys,Im a rookie with go fast boats and any advise is very helpful,im leaning towards a bracket. I was thinking of having it made for triples.Then i could mount twins and when i get more cash add a third.I dont know jack about inboards,but i can rebuild an outboard and can do the maintenance needed with these units.
