vhf question

what do you guys think about handheld vhf radios, are they any good or do you guys use the permanently installed ones, thanks

Handhelds don't have a lot of "@ss", but they work fine for short range (+/- 5 miles lake, more on open water).

Had a handheld. Range was very limited. They only have a 5W power rating. Went back to fixed mount for the 25W rating.

It really depends on where you will use it. Mine had problems at just a mile range do to the terrain a coupleof times. VHF's are 'line of sight'

I use a handheld vhf with the on boat antenna for better range. It's the "Rubber Duck" antenna that really limits the range. When I want real long range, I just switch on the 50 watt Motorola amp under the deck!;)

I have a fixed mount and carry a hand held in a bag as a back up.

I do the exact same thing as restabr.

Have found that the handheld is VERY handy while at the docks or at a local dockside resturant.

If you do any offshore running I would have both!

Its like sex. In a pinch, a handjob'll do, but its not the optimum.
