A little more info is needed here .... How big a boat? Cat or V? Ammenities? Some boats can go over 100 MPH with 500's, others are lucky if they see 70 MPH.

when your pocket book say thats enough:D

2000 hp in a 20 footer is about right :D

89.473 hp. Its been scientifically determined that that amount is enough.

But seriously, you need to post the boat information and Im sure people here can tell you what you want to know.

Back up a bit. The question is not how much HP is enough, because it's never enough. The more practical question is how much torque will your drives take.

If I was in your position I would order a boat with HP500EFI engines and XR drives. Then when you're tired of 500 HP, both the engines and the drives will handle a supercharger system that will boost you to 700-800 HP.

Adding 300 HP is worth 20-25 mph depending on hull type. So if you buy a boat that goes 80 with the 500 HP engines, the boat would be into triple digits with the superchargers.

That should be "enough" for a while.:D

Sorry to throw cold water on this topic, but he said it is his FIRST boat. With all the tragedies lately in new high power and high speed boats with less than experienced drivers, are we doing him or the Off Shore community any favors by telling him "More. More. More."

Typically I'd chuckle at those responses, but not this spring.

Good point Chart. Twin 500's in a 38 footer is already a boat that can get you hurt in a hurry. Take your time learning before upgrading.
