6 drive rotation on a cat?
New Skater 36, what are the pros and cons of inboard vs outboard rotation with Sterling 825's.
Thanks, John B |
Peter at Skater should be able to help you. I run my sixes on a 35' Motion cat in. In tends to be faster and bit less stable in the turns. Turning in with a "cat" will give more stern lift, out more bow lift.

No pics yet!
Peter says it all depends. He doesn't like to ride in fast boats.... |
John, maybe Tomcat36 will post. Thier boat was rigged at lake x and is plenty fast with vi drives. I think the props rotate out. When I am sure I will post
|
MM, I would like to turn out for safety in turning etc. and backing control. I also wouldn't mind some bow lift in the mid range. I believe there may be more prop slippage turning out? Anybody else have input?
|
Turn them in for calm water, out for rough water. I liked the way we were able to carry the bow with them turning in. If you ask T2x he'll tell you out only.
BTW, nice boat. Probably my all time favorite. Good luck with it. |
I TURN MY 32 SKATER IN WITH #5'S AND IT RUNS GREAT. I DONT LIKE OUT BECAUSE IT FEELS LIKE IT TRYS TO PIN THE NOSE IN AT HIGH SPEED IN CALM WATER
|
Merlin, Are you saying turning (in) raises the bow? I thought (in) raises the stern and (out) lifts the bow.
On the old 36 with bravos (out) tended to slip more and didn't feel tight but ran the same top speed. A Bravo 36 runs so flat that you feel like it's trying to drive through waves rather than over them the mid speed range. |
John, on my 30' motion turning in increased the bow lift tremendously but contrary to popular wisdom in back to back test I lost 3-5mph. and 200-300rpm. With the outboards turning out this boat requires more trim and goes faster.
|
I tested my 35 Jaguar with Randy from Cobra Power with the sixes spinning out. He hated the performance so we then turned them in and that is how I took delivery. This is the first true tunnel boat, my prior boat is a 27 daytona and has a center pod and bravos and I turned them in also. I hope this helps. Doug

Doug-
Please describe the difference in handling and speed when the prop rotation changed? What didn't Randy like? Thanks Due |

soory for the spelling!

With cats it depends on the location of the drives in relation to the tunnel as well as the diameter of the props as to whether turning in will give more bow-lift or stern-lift. This is due to the amount of tunnel water the props see.
Matt |
Most tend to turn in on a cat, due to stern lift. A cat will have enough bow lift due to the tunnel. I run my 32 skater with six's in as well. This is how it was set up at lake x, and it will run 125mph with 800sc's.
|
I ran my Chris Cat props turning out originally, but the boat kept "popping the tail" at 110. TNT said to try turning them in and the problem was eliminated. Ultimately it ran 125 with blown 572s (800 hp).
Turning at low speeds it leaned out more. At moderate speeds it turned flat. Due |
MY 32 HAS RAN 147 @ 7200 RPM 17/30 3 BLADES TURNING IN. ITS A ROCKETSHIP AND ITS WASNT DONE BUT I WAS!!!!

d-zwisle,
What power is in the boat, how fast, what props, who rigged? yours? thansk, John B |
Merlin,
Thats the fastest old style 32 I have heard of. I thought they lifted their tails over 140 and rode on the nose? Is this what happened? |
Due, The boat just did not achieve any top speed. Randy decided early into the run to switch rotations and props. The next run we were both impressed so the purchase was finalized. The Jag does lean a lot in slow turns and wallows like a big pig at speeds under 60 m.p.h.and doesn't respond well around docks with the props turning in but then I have never been comfortable with blower motors and docks so maybe it's me. I try not to run in tight slow areas. I knew I wasn't buying a ski boat. In rough water at speed there is no lean and it tracks and responds great. Doug

Doug-
Your Jag turns and wallows like many cats at low speeds. The Daytona and Chris Cat I had were like that too, as is a friends Skater. Once they pack some air, they come into their "own". My blower engines are pretty good, but occasionally one or both die during shifting when trying to dock and that can be annoying. Please keep me posted on your progress. We're getting ready to rig the engine compartment and I'll post photos in the Jaguar Owner's Forum. Thanks for the information! John |
THATS WHY I SPIN THE PROPS IN TO HAVE LESS TAIL LIFT AND I AM TAKING THE SPACERS OUT OF THE DRIVES THIS YEAR TO GIVE IT LESS TAIL LIFT. IT SHOULD RUN 150 THIS YEAR SEE YA:D

Mine are turning in .When several "experts" told me that the boat would perform better turning out I asked that Johnny try it. He told me that it probably was a waste of time since every 36 he rigged or tested turned in . But since he had not tested one with my power he would try it. As usual he was right the boat rode horrible ,Johnny coulden't get it off its nose, I think we topped out at 90. So much for that. What's happening with your boat is it almost ready. Are you down here? Call me I'd like to take you out for a ride. |
Jeff, Thanks for the information. The boat should be done later this month. I'll have Peter call John T for his tips. I'm up north now.

If you run a lot of flat water you'll really like the way the boat performs with them spinning in, it handles great that way too. However, if you run a lot of rough water spin them out, the boat will be slower in the calm but it handle 100 times better in the rough. The boat was setup by the best when it comes to 36's or just about any cat.
