Engine done! Need a prop!
You may know from my past thread of my situation. I blew my 502 last season and had a stroker motor built(548 cubes). The boat is a 24 baja outlaw. Well I finally picked up my engine last week. It dynoed at 545 horsepower and 638 foot/lbs. of torque. Peak power was at 5000 rpms. Not too bad. I am hoping this will help with my prop selection. I had some good suggestions last time I asked, but I did not have the dyno numbers. I do have a 25 mirage I may try for starters.

I'm guessing you'll need a 26 or maybe even a labbed 28 Bravo 1 prop. I had about 425 hp in my 24 Outlaw and could spin it to 5100-5200rpms.

I would expect a top end speed of 80, give or take a little.
A 4 blade in the 27 range should get you pretty close. With that motor in that boat I would prop it out to run as high an rpm as the engine builder feels is safe. Matt |
I've got a really nice 3 blade 26" Hydromotive if you'd like to try it. Cheap. I had it on a Baja 226ES with a big motor and it worked very well.

I have a 4 blade 27 Hydro that i may be looking to sell. I ran this on my 25 Checkmate with 560hp.

Re: Engine done! Need a prop!
Thanks again all for the advice. I bought a 27 hydro 4 blade from hi-perf-2000/
It is a great all around prop. He gave me a fair deal as well. (thanks, Mark) This prop is not labbed. I am able to spin it to 5000-5100. I would like to see more speed. I have not put a gps to it yet, but see around 73 on the speedo. I am guessing it around 68 on gps. I was hoping to see 5-6mph better. Could this prop be labbed for more top end? Would I get more speed out of a 3 blade? I am not having any problems getting on plane. It would come up like a ski boat if wanted. So I am willing to give up a little on the low end. Thanks, Chris |
Re: Engine done! Need a prop!
If its a Q4, then its really not a good prop for a 24 Outlaw. They give too much stern lift, and 24 Outlaws need bow lift. Try a 28 Bravo 1.

Re: Engine done! Need a prop!
It seems as if the problem you have now is too much stern-lift. The slip is too high and this could be caused by several things, one of them being a stern-liftin prop such as the Quad IV. You have some options. Keep the prop. It can be worked to reduce the stern lift and get the slip where it needs to be.
Other options would be to go with a prop with more box lift such as the Mirage Plus, Bravo 1, or Quad IVX. At what rpm was max torque? Matt |
Re: Engine done! Need a prop!
Back in 2002, I had a 540/640 in my 1989 24 Outlaw (Sport 240 back then) Hit 77 on GPS before I blew the motor. running a labbed 25 3 blader at 5400.
