Weird cooling prob

Had a Thermostat go last season...replaced it with another one and now I don't have a good reading on the gauge, it stays below 100 degrees. The gauge is working, if I short it...the gauge pegs out. Got any ideas?

offthefront 05-06-2004 12:04 PM

Maybe the Gauge is stuck open ?

I think the gauge is fine it just does not register when the tstat is hooked up. When I touch the gauge wire against metal it pegs it out which tells me the gauge is working.

It is the sender. You can try taking it out and putting it in hot water to see if it makes the gauge read. But for $8.00 it is not worth all the trouble.

ah forgot to mention....did that as well, replaced the sender as well as the tstat.

My bad ... I meant the thermo could be stuck open ...take it out and see what temp does

Did you use the Merc t-stat gasket????

It has crush rivets in it that act as a ground for the sender. Also, you if you use sealant on it or it won't ground properly either.

97BossHammer 05-06-2004 04:31 PM

it does have the merc gasket.....I did put sealant on it. guess the next try would be a new gasket w/ no sealant.

Got to have the rivets or the gauge won't work.

BadDog 05-06-2004 07:13 PM

You can run a ground wire around if you don't have the Merc gasket. Not worth the trouble. Go buy several so you have it next time.

You should use an ohms meter and see if your sender is grounded before you go pulling it apart.

well i replaced the thermostat gasket.....didn't fix the prob. Wonder what it could be?

Bad sender or its not getting good contact with the threads to ground itself.
