Help, Reinstalling roller rockers in HP500
Ok, the Merc shop manual says to torque the rocker bolts to 40 ft lbs, when I do that I am compressing the spring (even when the valves should be closed), doesn't seem right.
Also, the allen lock in the roller rocker bolt, should that be loosened up, then retightened to hold the rocker arm in place once set (seems right). And one more question, what should the rocker arm studs be torqued to? There is nothing in the manual about that. There is always a chance my torque wrench is not accurate at the lower torques, but things just don't seem right. Any help would be appreciated Other info, I had the heads and valves redone, valve springs replaced |
The manual proceedure might be for non adjustable rockers.
Sounds like yours are adjustable Crane Gold? Adjust them in the normal fashion if so. Adjust the intake valve when the exhaust for that cyl just opens. Adjust the exhaust when the intake for that cyl just starts closing. Adjustment = 1/2 turn past zero lash. |
Apply red locktite to rocker studs and torque to 40#.
As far as adjusting the valves/rockers, after reading your post, I would seriously get some help, if I were you. |
you need to turn motor over to top dead center on compression stroke then you can adjust the valves that are closed then you rotate 360 and adjust the rest call merc on witch one you adjust at each stroke, then lossen up the allen lock and scrwe the nut to 0 lash then 1/2 to 5/8 turn then lock down the allen lock.

Thanks for the replies. believe it or not, the Merc manual I have (a '99 Merc HP500 EFI Shop Manual) is wrong when covering reinstalling the rockers.
Infomaniac is right, it is describing the installation of a standard valve train, not roller rockers. I knew it did not seem right, got it now, thanks to all who responded. |
