What is the max. voltage the alternator can put out to charge the battery before it is to much.

12
13
14
15

shouldnt be more than 14.8v if voltage regulator is working correctly

I get 15v at the alt. and 14.5v at the battery is this ok.

I've seen some alternators "spike" after a heavy load has been put on the battery... just a little over 15 volts... but that is rare...it is only for a few seconds and it has to be a big alternator. Normally they run about 13.5 to 14 max.

How long is the alternator putting out that voltage... just for a short time after starting the motor?... or is it that high all the time... even after running for a couple of hours?

What kind of amperage is the battery getting? Have you tested that?

seahawk 05-13-2004 06:33 PM

I have'nt really noticed. I only checked it right after a start. Should it be less after running for a wile

seahawk 05-13-2004 06:34 PM

battery gets 14.5v when alt. is putting out 15v

gusman 05-13-2004 06:43 PM

if the voltage at the batt is 14.5 it should be fine.
