How to get fiberglass to shine
I have several spots on my top side that are scratched slightly from my daughter using a scotch-brite pad on the fiberglass...I am wondering how you go about getting faded/scuffed glass back to a nice shine. I was going to try a rubbing compound. If this doesn't work whats next? Sanding? If so what steps should go thru. I don't want to make it worse....
Thanks BH |
Re: How to get fiberglass to shine
3000 grit wet sandpaper then hand glaze (swirl remover) then wax with Frenzy Wax

Re: How to get fiberglass to shine
Try HD compound first. If shine doesnt come up, Wet sand by hand with 1000 or 1200 grit, followed by HD compound with wheel at 2000 - 2500 rpms, followed by couple coats of wax, buff with wheel at 1500rpms

Re: How to get fiberglass to shine
1200 or 1000 grit paper will still leave scratches on the fiberglass unless you follow with a higher grit paper. Been there and have done that.
As Bruce stated above try a compound first such as 3M Imperial Microfinishing Compound liquid (purchase at auto paint store) before sanding. The microfinishing compound will remove light scratches, then follow with wax. |

1000 Aqua buff then 2000 aqua buff at high speed and
use plenty of water when buffing. |

RE: Aqua
If you end up buying this stuff, I'm convinced it's ashes suspended in a soft putty  Make sure you have a spray bottle of water it drys as soon as you start to buff it. I ended up spreading some on the surface then spraying it down and then started buffing. Make sure you keep the wheel clean and then buff it off. Great product :drink: RE: Frenzy wax The stuff cleans like you will not believe! I used it on my out-drives and tabs that had the muck on them from last season and was impressed on how it wiped the stuff right off. It is hands down the easiest wax I have ever used goes on/off as advertised. Great Product :drink: Using both of these products cut my spring prep time in half. No I don't get paid by these people :D just a guy that hates to buff and wax. |
Re: How to get fiberglass to shine
BadHabit.......... Go get some 3M FinesseIt-II (or III) which is really used as a final buff after a 1500wet sand. (almost like what you have). Use it with a right angle polisher at a low speed......... It will shine like glass. (its basically a super fine compound....... you cant even feel the stuff). It may take a few times, but is very VERY safe to use. (fyi, does not work with a random orbit all that well, as you need the speed)
Then apply whatever wax you choose to. Bob |
