Standard Bravo drive vs bravo xr/xs

can someone please explain to me (new to the world of the inboard/outboard motor) what is the difference between the standard bravo 1 drive and the bravo xr and xs drive?

which is the better drive for a boat weighing as much as a 35 cafe racer? and why? are they easily interchageable

Would i have regular problems or should i have very few problems running a standard bravo 1 drive to a 502 merc on a 35 cafe? Is that a common package?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Standard Bravo drive vs bravo xr/xs

I had 2000 Bravo's on a 1994 Cafe with no problems, power was 2000 502 MAG MPI's.

I think Merc does not build the XZ that you refer to has xs anymore.

The XR's have straight cut gears according to what I heard and can handle a little more HP than the Standard Bravo's, they do rob you of a little more horsepower and are more expensive than std. Bravo's.

Guys in Gladiators are running up to 800 horses thru XR's but I do not know how long they last doing that. A Cafe weights 9400 dry and if you can swing the XR's that is the way I would go. Remember that drives blow up more due to torque stress on take-offs than running WFO so take it easy when coming out of the hole.

Like everything these days it only comes down to $.

Good Luck Rhory.
