Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Ok...so I think I am going to break-down and buy some slip-ins to use on special occasions where the DNR/lake patrol like to be present. I am looking at Eddie Marine Double X and Livorsi LIVORSI. Eddie Marine claims "up to 12 dB reduction" while the Livorsi testing "showed reduced sound of 4-5 dB".
Why would one be better than the other? Will these affect performance and if so, how significantly? |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
GGB has some new slip-ins, which I'm considering: check their web site. www.gba.ca

Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Ummm...Due....that link takes me to Golden Basketball Association.....what's up?
|
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
So I figured it out...your link is misspelled and it's located at www.ggb.ca. Their slip in's are considerably more than the ones I listed. Their products look nice but am wondering if the price difference is worth it? 4" inserts are $289 versus $73 from Livorsi....is a huge difference. Of course if they are truly that much better, than perhaps they are worth it!
|
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
how can they be worth it???If they are slip in and for special occasions when Larry law may be around the difference can only be performance...right? If I worried about a noise ticket I'm sure not looking for every HP.....
|
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
dyno,
Interesting point....don't we want the best of both worlds for performance AND to be legal? I do worry about a noise ticket and performance....the question that I have is which slip in is better, Livorsi or Eddie Marine? If performance falls off a bit with the insert, it's acceptable if the net result keeps the water patrol from issuing me a ticket. Which one get's me to a legal level with the best performance? |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Those "Double X" Slip ins will definetly reduce your power. The louver insert looked interesting. They do reduce the id of your exhaust by an inch (?). I wonder how that would affect things.
You could also consider CMI. They have simple clamp on muffler that is also good the 10db. |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Cord,
Any idea on price for the CMI clamp on? I figured that the reduction in diameter would hinder performance but want to make sure that if I buy either of them that they reduce the dB down to legal level. If they don't reduce it enough, no sense of even putting them in. I have silent choice right now but just want to avoid complications with the DNR....am thinking of heading to Lake Winnebago and have heard that the DNR are pretty strict. Will also be heading to the Mississippi River in August for the Miss/St. Croix poker run and have heard the St. Croix area is tough with water patrol. |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Sorry about the spelling on that site: too much on my mind today.
The X style (cheap) is out for me because HP is important. I want the mufflers full time. The headers/tailpipes for my boat are CMI custom step/big tubes with custom side by side (welded together) tailpipes with integral H pipe and they're "dry" to the tip. Although the noise enforcement is minimal here, I want to be a "good" neighbor. I love the sound of open/dry headers, but not in a residential area. Due |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Due,
Sounds like for your application the ggb would work the best. Since mine will be temporary, I'm thinking that possibly the Eddie or Livorsi will work. If it affects horsepower too much perhaps I'll go with something like the GGB style. |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
I bit the bullet and installed the large Corsa Muffler Tips on my Fountain. I did not lose a single MPH and you can actually have a conversation in the boat while driving. I thought I would miss the noise, but I really don't.
|
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
I really don't want to quote a price. It might have been in the $300 dollar range. They guaranteed that you would be legal or they would "work with you" to get you legal. Read that any way you want to. And yes, the DNR on Winni is freekin' strict. I got my ticket up there last year with my broken Teague mufflers. They do check for the silent choice, but don't seem to recognize my Teague operable mufflers. They have only looked for the Y pipe.

Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Hey guy's, Graham from GGB. The High Flow louver insert creates WAY less backpressure than the other listed brands and are also quieter to boot. We know this because we've tested ours against the others. On average a 10-12 dB(A) reduction in sound will be seen or rather heard. Yes the price is substantially more but reflects the manufacturing gone into each muffler. The 289.00 price includes shipping if that makes it any easier to swallow.
Thanks Graham Barkey GGB |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Graham-
Any problems importing those mufflers to the US from Canada? Just kidding: we tried sending NASCAR race tickets to a guy who lives in Vancouver and also owns a condo at Texas Motor Speedway, but Canadian customs wanted to slap on a duty of 150%. The tickets were for the season and were about $3,000. US. Due |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Regarding the slip ins, what makes them any different than the 4" X 8" IMCOs here http://www.imcomarine.com/pages/exhuast.html
Don't they both (GGBs and IMCO) reduce the inside diameter in the same fashion? Thanks, Dave BTW, if you have them, the internal flappers need to be removed. |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
GGB-I have to be carefull with asking too much information. I don't want them to hit you up for advertiser fees. Could you post a pic of these inserts? I have Teague switchable tips. The ends were open so a flapper could be inserted. Would your inserts fit my tips? They are 4.5" diameter-how much power will I loose? Don't sugar coat it, tell me straight up.

Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
I have a set of those double x inserts on a slightly modified 454. I dont use them often. I loose about 200 RPM. On my old jet boat about 3 or 4 mph. They do cut the noise quite a bit.

Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Dave,
I almost got ticket from DNR last year. Where? Lake Monona! I had new Sunsation 288 just out for 15min. Anyway, I had 4" in-line muffler but I lost RPM and Speed. This year, I have transom mount from Corsa. It is better than I had last year. Due to not reducing small diameter. Just be care full w/DNR. |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Speedyone,
I'm sure I know who you are but not sure if we have officially met. I did meet a guy from the Rockford, IL area named Randy who had a 288. The only other Sunsation I know is the channel near the old Muskie and you had a little outboard rocket prior to the Sunsation. Anyway....the DNR are weird in Madison as I'm not sure they even know how to administer the dB test (I'm not about to call them on it). Anyway....I don't think I have room for the transom mount the way that my integrated swim platform and current tips are installed. I could switch the tips but would be easier to just install the slip-ins. Usually in Madison I don't get much of a chance to hit top-end simply because the water gets so rough on the weekends and many inexperienced boaters on weekends. Perhaps I'll be at Gilligan's Island sometime soon if and when the rain ever stops. I typically hang out with a small group of guys that have Baja's (25-33 and everything in between). Oh yeah....don't hold that against me :) |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Ya!
my name is Ken. Yes, I had Triad but I am getting old. My back won't hold so well and my boss got have bath room or you know!. Anyway, my friend got ticket last year from DNR. $150 on the spot. I was lucky, they didn't have db meter with them. I was thinking other muffler but I got from Sunsation and this Spring I just put them on. When come to Lake let me know. Ken. |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
First off we utilize 100% of the tube diameter (3¾ inches on a 4" insert)for the flow of exhaust, not just the area inward from the louvered tube. Secondly we break up the louver tube to create low pressure chambers which cancels the sound waves not the performance. Nordic heat - At first glance we do reduce the inside diameter in the same fashion as the others, but that isn't the only area that the exhaust has to travel through. Look on our site and you'll see that the exhaust flows outward from the centre of the louver also, that's the Big difference.
It aint just the price Rick - More flow - less noise gauranteed. We have a new Clamp-on that will allow you to run this insert and still leave the internal water flap installed. If I could figure out how to post a pic here I would. Anyone? |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
What kind of power are you running Cord?

Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
I have the Rex Marine slip-ins which are like the double-x. I noticed maybe a 1 mph difference on a modified SBC with 9.5:1 cr. It helped with the noise a bit. I wouldn't say it's quiet, but it took away that harsh exhaust note. I noticed about an 8db reduction in sound level on my sound level meter at 50ft at idle. Rex makes them with the center section as a flapper so you can open them up without removing them, but they are quite a bit more expensive with that option. Maybe I'll pull the meter out, and do another comparison. It's been a while.

Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
540, 600hp and I'd really hate to loose some. Maybe that's the price I have to pay though. These being a slip in, I suppose I could pull them out when I'm less restrictive water.

Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
GGB,
Can you quantify how many db quieter your inserts is vs Imco's louvered design is. It does sound like you have a different internal design. Does your design flow more than Imco's? If so, without getting too technical, how do you do that with what looks like a similar cross sectional area. The inside diameter looks like about 2 3/4 or 3" not 3 3/4" by the picture on your web site. Thanks in advance for the comparison, Rick |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Cord, we will be going to the dyno with these inserts in the near future. As for 600 HP, with the 4.5 inch I gonna say NO lose of rpm or mph out on the water. I have a dealer testing this week with the 4.5 inserts on 900HP, I can let you know the outcome first of next week. Shoot me an email and I'll get you the feedback.
rv - With a conventional louver design the same 8" length the High Flow Louver recorded an addition reduction of 4 dB(A). Send me an email and I'll get you some more pics of the inside of the muffler that'll better explain. Graham |

Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Graham,
4db sound like a big improvement. This is over a Imco slip-in louvered type right? Here is my email: [email protected]. Thanks, Rick |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Another question,
your website states that the slip ins fit into the exhaust hose. Does this mean that they are the same size/diameter as the tips? If so, these wont work like traditional slip ins. Maybe you could explain. Thanks, Dave |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Dave,
I boat on the southern half of Winnebago and have never had a problem with the DNR. They have however been really watching the Fox and Wolf rivers out of Oshkosh. I've heard of many tickets being given out for noise violations. Your first problem is that you don't comply with state regs for a muffling device with your silent choice. Without that they don't even need to test your sound level, they can ticket you for no muffler. I have silent choice also and just this year decided to add mufflers. I bought the EMI inserts in a small clamp on tip for $129. The tips can be slipped on and off pretty easily. I don't know what to say about sound levels. I've never seen any results of tests performed the way the DNR does it in WI. Regarding power losses, I never saw any increased performance from my 7.4 with the thru hull open. If that's true, the mufflers can't hurt. Dennis Moore says in his book that unless you have aver 350hp, opening the thru hulls won't increase performance. |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
bago,
Thanks for the response. I know the law and understand that the silent choice is illegal anyway but if I have mufflers with the silent choice, I would be legal and would make them do a sound test. I do have quite a bit more than 350 horsepower and would like to use it all when possible. I understand that I may have to settle for a slight horsepower loss in order to be legal at that location and I'm ok with it. I was just looking for opinions for those that have tried the examples I gave and to see what the "real world" losses/results were. I believe I'll go with the slip ins from Eddie Marine as they claim more reduction in dB levels. Thanks for the info about Winnebago though as I have never been there yet. Am looking forward to doing some boating there. Any places that I must hit while there? Good places to raft up? |
Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Theres a place just south of Oshkosh on the west shore. Some call it party bay, others the cove. It sees a lot of boats on a summer weekend. 88° 30' and 43° 50' on the gps will get you there. Fond du Lac has a great ramp at Supple Marsh off of hwy 45. About a 20 min ride from there to Oshkosh. There are some nice places up the river in Oshkosh and beyond also. Fratello's is a restaurant attached to the Fox River Brewery. They have plenty of dock space and good beer. It's on the North side of the river in downtown Oshkosh. A lot of boats hang out upriver on sandbars between lakes Winneconne and Poygan. Plenty of room to roam.

Re: Which Slip-In Mufflers to use?
Dave, it states that: All inserts slide inside their respective size exhaust. The exhaust we are referring to would be the tubing itself NOT the rubber hose. Inserts would be lose inside the hose. Sorry for any confusion, looks like we need to explain that a little better.
