Re: Can't fill fuel tank...puking vent?!?
Damn...I must be getting 38mpg! Approximately how much gas should a lightweight deep "V" (4500 lbs.) with a stock 454/330 TRS & Holley 750 use on plane (2300 rpm)?

Re: Can't fill fuel tank...puking vent?!?
Danny,
That's a problem I had with my Martini many moons ago and it's a very simple fix, first an observation. I can only get my 90 gal. tank completely full by gassing up on the trailer (and even then it helps to lower the tongue a little, it's that aft filler inlet situ) Now the 'puking' issue: I fabricated an aluminum puke tank that is mounted in the vent line coming off the tank and retained the original vent to the outside of the boat. It has a petcock at the bottom to allow for draining every few fillups. Now I have COMPLETE confidence at the gas stations just maxing out the pump! While filling I'm not waiting for the inevitable gush from the overflow and ultimately down the side of my hull, it simply overflows cleanly into the internal catch can and vents normally to the atmosphere just like it should. No mess, no environmental hazard! EVERY boat should have one of these and maybe the newer ones do but for us 'old school' guys this works like a damn! I could get you a picture if you like Danny. Hell, maybe I should build/add them for my product line if there was enough interest. Talk to you bros' Brian :drink: |

Yep...after staring at the set-up for a long time, I sorta suspected the angle of the tank and the filler inlet position. Observing the exaggerated angle at rest, simple geometry says the gas ain't going to flow uphill. How difficult would it be to re-locate the filler to the front of the tank? You'd have to install a hatch in the floor and fuel from inside the cockpit. Coast Guard may not approve, but I bet it would work. Maybe a different tank configuration. Maybe next year when I tear everything out. Unfortunately, I do not have the option of fueling on the trailer. Boat is stored in the water. I did fuel on the trailer the day the boat was delivered and gassed it full without puking or splashing back through the fill neck. A pic would be great. I know there are several companies that sell aluminum puke tanks for drag cars made to keep oil & coolant off the track. I might be able to adapt one of those. "Old School" is right! That was my first name choice, but I decided to go with "Extension". Best regards, D. Ocean Pompano Beach, FLA |
