something let go!

twin 454's vee drive transmissins. boat is a wellcraft. so today while out something has happened? crunching noise in the transmission. engine seems to run fine but once in gear sounds like a bad bearing. any ideas?

did you try spinning the props while in gear? (engine off!) maybe the drive went!

Could be bearings, chain drive, or reduction gear (depending on tranny). Only way is to take it apart. Note that due to short prop shaft lengths on V drives, they more susceptible to engine alignment problems. Those are usually output shaft seals and bearings.

Center bearing in v-drive burned up or drive damper failed.

o.k. , had the mechanic look at it today. so we started it up and in gear she went. no problems where noticed. thumping sound gone! hopefuly it was just a peice of debris that has freed it self from the shaft. i did notice a peice of blue camping matress foam floating beside the boat once we got it docked and things settled down.
cant wait to get her out again though, slowly ironing out the many problems we have had so far this year! thanks for the response!
