Power Steering Pump Question
I think my power steering pump is on the way out. :(
It is screaming a bit, but does not seem to be getting hot. I have pulled the belt off and there is a lot of movement (shucking in and out), if i pull on the pulley. I think it's best I just change it before I end up with oil everywhere. Anyway, my question is the pump on my 1999 7.4MPI any different from an automotive pump? Can I just go to an auto parts store and buy a power steering pump for a 7.4 truck engine? I don't want to be completely cheap, but if I don't have to buy from a marine dealer, it would be easier... Thanks |
Re: Power Steering Pump Question
Can't say for sure, but when I rebuilt the power steering pump on my Corvette (1974), the thing looked exactly like the pump in my boat.

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
Buy a rebuild kit for the pump and do it yourself if you can. Might not be able to but it is worth a try.

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
Pat, I just replaced the one on my 1990 Cafe. Do a search on power steering pumps and it will give you the NAPA part number for the one I used..

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
I believe the main pump section of just about all of the gm pumps is the same. There are slight differences in output because of combinations of "relief valve/spring/output orifice diameter/connection type" of the removable main thread in valve body. Other differences are of course in the type of reservoir.

Re: Power Steering Pump Question
Thanks Guys!
I bought the Napa one listed... Have not had a chance to check if it will work yet. |
Re: Power Steering Pump Question
Just curious what one costs at Napa. I just bought a new Merc Blue one for $320.
Thanks, Brian |
Re: Power Steering Pump Question
The Napa pump is a reman for $68 with a $16 core charge.
Have not made the switch yet, hoping it will not be that different. |
