Sheared Trailer Lugs

A friend of mine had all his lugnuts shear off on his front axle of his tandom axle trailer, spitting off the tire and wheel, any ideas what causes this?...Thanks for any ideas, Fred

Often it's a loose wheel that will wobble and work harded the lugs.

True Cord....we are trying to analize all the possibilities, that idea being one of them....the lugs broke at the first thread making it look as if the nut may be bottomed out and the wheel wasn't totally tight....Fred

Re: Sheared Trailer Lugs

Most likely the rim got loose. We had it happen on a new set of tires on our tow rig once. If you do not have metal inserts in the alluminum rim then you have to re-torque them a number of times. Most likely the lugs backed off however one way or another. Check all the other rims to make sure.
