Mobile 1 gear oil in blower?
Anybody know if 75w90 Mobile 1 gear oil is safe to use in a supercharger 525SC?

My mechanic has used it and says it's fine along with these others too.

Re: Mobile 1 gear oil in blower?
I double checked and all are API GL-5 rated: Mobil-1, Amsoil, Royal Purple and Redline. Now be careful in that some lower end gear lubes are not GL5 rated a lot are GL4 rated. Backwards compatibility is always fine.
For gear cases: Most outboard manufactures recommend API-GL5 gear oil for their lower units. API-GL5 gear lubricants are for both mechanical shift units calling for type B gear oil and electrical shift mechanisms calling for type C gear oil (only the viscosity value will be different for each application) I have read where using a premium gear lube can reduce temps. by 50 degrees F. It's about the same benefit as adding a decent shower. I think gear cases are an excellent place to evaluate the benefits of a lube because you don't have the heat of the engine and other factors to contend with. Here it's just heat of friction and synthetics shine! I consider them a "poor man's drive shower". Don't want to start any chit though! Use what you like! You should get the same benefits in your blower. Benz uses the Mobil-1 you mentioned in their AMG blowers. |

Re: Mobile 1 gear oil in blower?
I've been wanting to change my 575SCI blower to Mobil 1 75-90 since I'm at 120 hrs. One mechanic told me it would be fine and another said not to use synthetic and made me nervous enough that I haven't done it yet. I'm a big synthetic fan and can't see where it could be bad as long as the seals are synthetic rated. The blower shop confirmed that it should be fine. Anybody have a procedure for draining the oil other than removing the blower and turning it upside down. There doesn't seem to be any drain plug and the front fill hole has a metal baffle or plate preventing me from attempting to suck it out. Has anyone removed a front lower gear drive cover bolt and gotten drainage.

Whipple says to use a synthetic 5w-50 weight oil. I would use a lesser viscosity in a synthetic as well like Castrol has a synthetic 5w50 or go with 15w50 Mobil-1. That's just me. You just don't need to go "toe to toe" on viscosities when changing to a synthetic. That's a benefit European's see but we don't for some reason. I keep telling myself Benz uses 0w40 in 500 HP AMG's and intervals of 15,000 miles. They make a darn good filter though! |
Re: Mobile 1 gear oil in blower?
Has no one changed their own oil in their 575SCI blower? Are you just running them till they drop? Anyone have a manual that shows a way to change the blower oil without complete removal?
Thanks |

Would this possibly work? Just saw it and wondered. Looks like if this idea has any merit getting the oil hot and thinner after a good run and using an oil suction changer device or electric pump might do it. |
