Sticky Trim Indicators

Does anyone have a quick fix for sticky trim indicators? It seems that the starboard side indicator likes to stick as the drive moves out! The boat is a 1990 Formula 292 w/454mags & Broavo 1's.

Thanks :)

Are they the Mercury tube type that clamp to the trim cylinder?

If so, I take mine apart every year and run a shotgun cleaning brush thru the tube and a scotch brite pad on the plastic rod, lube real good with white grease and reassemble.

I had a 88' donzi that did this and I just replaced the cables. They are do if they are original. You could try taking the cable off and squirting some penetrating oil in the cable to loosenit up?

Yeah, they are the long cylinder OEM style mercruiser stuff. Last year, I think I sprayed some WD40 and it worked for a little while. Is it hard to take them apart and reassemble?

I had the same problem with mine(a 1989). Replace cables last spring and still have the problem with the starboard one :hothead: Maybe I should try the cleaning trick on the tube :)

Well, I WD40'd them, the port side works great but the starboard side is still a little sticky. Maybe, I'll have to take them apart. I'd rather wait until the winter to mess around with them!

somehow mine got out of alignment, and bent the outer sleeve. had to remove it and straighten it. works fine now.

Re: Sticky Trim Indicators

WD-40 a little too light to use on the drive indicators. the water will wash it out, you have to use something a little heaver, such as lithium grease or any mid weight waterproof lube.
