Oil Cooler Install
 

I'm installing an oil cooler and want to make sure that I don't screw this up. My intention is to run a line out of the oil filter remote adapter on the engine, into the remote filter, out of the remote filter into the oil cooler, out of the cooler back to the oil filter adapter on the engine. Does this sound OK? I have heard that the oil flow through the adapter should be against the flow of water. I can't see why this would matter and would cause a real plumbing problem for me. Can the oil and water flow in the same direction? Thanks for your help.

The efficiency of a counter flow is higher.
Try this for an example:
Same direction, water goes in at 0 degrees C, oil at 100 degrees C. 100% heat exchange would result in both exiting at 50 degrees C on the same end.
Opposite direction, water enters at 0, oil from oposite direction at 100 degrees. 100 % efficiency would result in water exiting at 100 degrees, oil exiting at 0 degrees.

Yea, it was a plumbing nightmare but my temps dropped a lot when I changed it back to counterflow.

HOw much did they drop? You need to keep the oil warm to produce horsepower, the same is true that you need to keep it cool too.

I am assuming you have stock size coolers. I run a 3" cooler on a blown motor and the reverse flow kept my oil temps too low.

I was running 275 and climbing, now 230 at wot and steady.

Also plugged relief valves and using Baldwin 1441 filters

Thats a nice temp, sounds like you do have it under control.

I don't know if you boat in warm water or not, but you may want to add a thermostat to help bring the oil up to temp quicker. Dyno posted one under the tech section a couple of weeks ago that looked simpler than the standard permacool one.
