Just bought a boat and the shifters are very very sticky. Any quick fixes to this??

I have heard that the intermediate shift cable is usually the culprit has anyone ever replaced one of these?

Is it difficult?

Yes, we picked up a 2000 Velocity 390, 500 EFI's. Jill wanted 10 feet and a windshield... Well she got her 10 feet but no windshield. She loves the ride! Hell I love it and its fast.

The Poker run is canceled this Saturday but there will be a fun run to Jackson's let me know if you are interested I can get you the details. Keep an eye out for me around the docks I am extremely hazardous ( Too many levers, also they are extremely sticky the boat hasn't been used hardly at all.)

I am still new to this site but, I'll give my 2 cents. From my knowledge about Merc. shift cables.
1. Mercury does not want any tight bends
2. There should be NO zip straps/tie raps on cables at least 3-4 feet away from the helm or transfer bracket on the engine.

1. check for the bends and tie wraps, see if this helps, if not
2. unhook helm cable at engine and shift. should shift easily, if not check for cable routing ,cut tie wraps and cable corrosion. if it shifts easily
3. unhook drive cable. With boat in the water and securely tied and Idling bellow 900rpm. Try shifting drive cable by hand (if i remember rightly pushing on cable to go fwd and out to go rev) should shift easily. CAUTION(I don't have the manual in front of me but if anyone knows please inform "two- air") this engine might be equipped with a switch at the transfer bracket that kills the motor for a second to allow smooth shifting like an alpha, if it does i would cut the engine for a second while simultaneously shifting the drive cable.
4. if it is tight check for routing. If this don't help then the drives may need to be looked at by a certified reputable Mec. mechanic.
