High-Torque, Gear Reduction Top Mount CCW Starters

I've tried two pairs of top mount, ccw starters and am still having difficulty turning the engines over. The engine's will rotate and eventually crank but the starters just don't seem to be as rotating it as strong as they should. My 540's are only 9:1 compression.

I've also tried two different pairs of battery's and checked all the battery cables and cable ends. The battery cable are new 1/0 gauge and the cables lugs are all securely crimped and heatshrinked.

I am considering giving a pair of high-torque, gear reduction top mount ccw starters a try, but before I drop another $400 on a pair of starters, after having already spent almost $1000 in the last month on 4 starters and 4 battery's, I'd like to know if anyone has seen a marked difference in starting ability with them compared to a standard Delco based starter.

Are these available? Do you have a part number?

Thanks,

I used a standard gear reduced High torque on a 406ci small block with 10:1 in my old boat, (to save weight) and had to upgrade my cables to the starter and ground to get it to spin faster, I wound up using double cables on both (+) and (-), as it was cheaper than "special" large diameter single cables. It worked great.

Steve H,

I've seen them in a couple of catalogs, for instance they are PN: 305-10 at Eddie Marine.

"These starters are brand new High Torque Delco Marine starters - not rebuilts. They meet US Coast Guard requirements and utilize new gear-reduction technology for increased cranking efficiency. And they are half the size and weight of the older models."

Check the condition of the starter casing. Current must flow through the starter casing to reach the brushes and a coroded edge on either edge of the case will drop the actual voltage reaching the brushes just like a bad cable would.
