Mechanical Fuel Pump
 

Does anyone know the correct model number for a replacement fuel pump for a 1986 454 mercruiser (TRS 400)? I have purchased 2 with different model numbers (both parts guys thought it was right) that look similar to the original except that the inlet and outlet is reversed. On my engine there is a rigid fuel line from the pump to the carburator so switching the lines is not posible. I do not have the tools to fabricate another rigid line that reaches to the other side of the new pump. What is my safest alternative? The pump looks like it can have the lower section removed and reversed. Is that a good or bad idea?

I had a similar problem and also had to rotate the bottom so the fittings would line up. I think you also could use your old "bottom" on your new "top".

Call BAM Marine in FL, Marc will have the answer and most likely the part!!!

Easiest way to reach him is call shortly after 5 PM, he picks up the phone himself and owns the joint. That outfit has always delivered for me.

Thank you for the responses. Followup question: how secure is the pump from leaks after removing, rotating, and reassembling the bottom to the top of the pump? In other words, is there tricks involved with ensuring that it does not leak?

Regarding BAM marine; I left them an email so I hope to hear back soon. In the mean time, I looked the part up on their site and it shows the pump as an exact match to my original. We'll see what they say.
