Greasing the drive coupler
On a single, is it easier or possible to grease the drive coupler from inside?
I was doing some maintenance last night and noticed the zerk fitting on the drive coupler and wondered. If it is done that way, how do you know when you have enough grease in there? Is there only one zerk fitting on the coupler? Thanks |
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
i think u r speaking of the gimbal bearing fitting on the right side of the transom ass.???...
you should pull the drive and inspect the bearing (by feel)...then grease...then wipe excess. hope i answered it for ya??? |
Re: Greasing the drive coupler

Re: Greasing the drive coupler
yeah, definately the drive coupler. Noticable from the ass end of the motor where the shaft extends into. There is an opening that allows visable sight of the shaft and zerk fitting.
The zerk is angled and might be difficult to get a grease gun in there which is why I asked if it could be done from the inside. |
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
yea if you over grease you make a mess!!
|
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
Use a grease gun with the flexible rubber hose. Greased from inside with the drive installed. Peice of cake. I always grease until it just starts ozzing out.
Always easier to clean up a little extra than to pull a motor. ;) |
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
Yep, get a flexible hose gun and hit both zerks. I usually do it a couple times a season, and/or before long trips. I also hit the one on the gimble housing to get the bearing.

Re: Greasing the drive coupler
HP-I looked in the truck last night and saw that the mrs still had not returned the alignment tool to you! I'm going to put her on this asap.
Audacity-Hp will only be slightly out of your way. Maybe 30 minutes. On your way up to Oshkosh, there will be another dirt track on your lower left directly across from the Merc plant. Never ridden it, but it looks interesting. |
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
there is some big yam dealer around there that has a track that jeff built and maintains as well...
seems like everytime i'm in WI....IT RAINS! |

Re: Greasing the drive coupler
Cord, NP on the tool, whenever she has a chance.
Cord, Audacity, the Yamaha track you are speaking of is North of Oshkosh and is there if you buy from that dealer. We asked a few years ago if anyone could ride and he said at that time it was for purchasers only. Nice track and is catered for the smaller riders too. The track across from Merc is the Fond-DuLac track. Privately owned and was once the owners practice track that he turned into a track for anyone. You need to be a member to ride that (simple form and money). Used to be real cheap to be a member until the insurance killed him so the rates went up. It was once $50.00 a year for a family now it is up to $275.00. Joey, where is the guys track in Oshkosh? I am about an hour or so from Oshkosh..unfortunately my Summer is jammed but let me know, maybe I can swing something. |
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
we can ride NP at the yam track...jeff is the one that keeps it up....he lives in winneconne and it's in his yard so we are not limited on times....i'll be sure and post if i come that way...

BH Merc does make a grease specifically made for the coupler splines. 'course any grease is better than none. |
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
in a performance boat u should be checking the u-joints more often anyway.
i think there are two fittings |
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
where is the zirk for the coupler? do you grease it from the zirk on the drive itself.....or from inside the engine compartment? I must be over looking a zirk.
|
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
There are 3 places that you should shoot with the gun.
1. Pull the drive and hit the zerks on both u-joints. 2 Zerks. 2. Re-install drive and hit the zerk on the outside lower right of the gimble housing to get the gimble bearing. 1 Zerk. 3. Looking stright down from the top at the back of the motor you will see where the shaft goes into the coupler. on the face of the coupler there are 2 Zerks 180 degrees from each other. You may need to tap the key to hit both of these. 5 Zerks total and only 1 Jerk needed to Grease them. :) |
Re: Greasing the drive coupler
"2.Re-install drive and hit the zerk on the outside lower right of the gimble housing to get the gimble bearing. 1 Zerk. "....do this with out the drive installed....turn bearing by hand as you pump grease...wipe excess....grease shaft prior to install...forget greasing the coupler zirks

Re: Greasing the drive coupler
we have 2 jerks greasing!
