What Oil Trs Drives, Trans
I know this question has been asked before somewhere but, what kind of synthetic oil or lube can I run in my outdrives and trans (does the trans take regular auto trans fluid, (my first trs)that I can get at Murreys or autozone or any normal retailer . I run mobile 1 15w50 in the motor is there anything special about marine gear lube as aposed to automotive?

Run Amzoil in the drive 80w90 and B&M trick shift in the trans.
Or just guy the Merc stuff. |
Re: What Oil Trs Drives, Trans
The transmissions are just like a cars, you can run a good Dextron and change it once a year when the drives are serviced. As far as the oil in the drives, everyone has there own brand, weight or concoction. I like to use the old mercury Premium gear lube with an additive like ProBlend gear additive. We also use an oil called Schaffer. It is big in the farming and machinery world but has shown promising results in our drives. On the drives I have taken apart to reseal or just to check up on, the gear faces look great and the races on the bearings shoiw very little wear.
But like I said, theres so many choices out there, mine is only one of many. If you have any questions feel free to call. Pwrbt33- John S. Offshore Performance 1-877-GOFAST1 |

I don't have a service manual yet, but how much oil does a drive take and can I just drain it then fill it from the resivor in the boat?

Re: What Oil Trs Drives, Trans
I have used Amsoil series 2000 75/90 "race proven" for several years and no problems. Does seem to run cooler than anything else also. Drain and fill from the lower gearcase, fill to the vent hole on the upper drive, and then fill the reservoir to the indicated level. NO, you CANNOT fill a drained unit from the reservoir! If these are B/W trannies, Tom Huber who builds the super competition B/W's says Ford type FA. But whatever you use, be sure that it is rated for competition low or no slip formula. I happen to use Amsoil's no slip racing AFT. --- jp

jpclear-- You tell em' jer--no one knows those TRS's like you do. Just came back from tinkering with the boat. Took it out yesterday. What a blast! I'm trying to save gas so I didn't go over 85. It really does make a difference.--Lou
