small high-torque starter/TRS rear mnt.
I'm looking to replace my old starters with the new, small high-torque units.
Does Merc make a replacement for the rear mount, top of the bellhousing, ring gear towards transom. (TRS application) If so does anyone have the part # for this starter? Thanks, Kurt. |
Re: small high-torque starter/TRS rear mnt.
Kurt, I have yet to see a gear reduction reverse rotation starter. I have probably built 2 to 3 hundred marine starters and I can tell you, the big case, four field super heavy wound left hand spinners are far superior in quality to the small gear reduction units. If you are interested, pm me and I can tell you about my "Monster Starters" custom built units.

Re: small high-torque starter/TRS rear mnt.
Tilton makes the "Super Starter". They make a reverse marine rear mount unit that would be a direct replacement for your factory starter on the Mercury TRS bellhousing. I have been using these for 6 years with no issues. I would buy them again. Maybe you can get thre part number from their website.

Re: small high-torque starter/TRS rear mnt.
The Tilton Super Starter you want is #54-11254. This is the reverse rotation std.duty bell housing mount. This Mercury Marine replacement is shown in the current Tilton catalog on page 11. I looked up my old invoice and this is the same part number I bought in 1997. You can order these from any HP parts house like Summit or Jeg's. You really need to want these units as they aren't cheap.

You guys south of the 49th sure get better access to marine parts than we do up here. No one here even carries Tilton sterters. Maybe I should.
