Low Temp reading / 454 Mag MPI

My temp usually runs about 170. Yesterday my gauge would not read over 150 even after running for miles. I was thinking of going ahead and replacing the coolant temp sensor and the thermostat. Those two parts are cheap. This motor has 520 hours on it and seem to be running fine. Does it sound like I am on the right track?

sounds to me like its going to make more power running colder. Dave you are the man.520hrs dammmm.my boat is a 99 and now after the claudios run now has 88 hrs on it with the new motor having 3 hrs.And yes we did miss you at the run had to be 10 superboats there.

Re: Low Temp reading / 454 Mag MPI

Hey Mike,

I'd like to be making more power but I think I am getting a false reading on my gauge. Plus I think the MPI motors will run too rich if the temp is too low. I didn't notice any soot on my transom. Thats why I think it could be a bad temp sender. I was just looking for an expert opinion here.

Thanks,
Dave

HI! Dave:
I think your on the right track. If it were the T- Stat, wouldn't it run hotter? If you can get a scan tool, you could verify the operating temperature while running. Good Luck.
