Transom Inner/Outer Assembly Method

Ok,
So I'm finally putting things back together on the transom of my project. What method are most people using to seal the transom outer to the transom. 1) Just the Merc gasket ? 2) Merc gasket and silicon? 3) Merc gasket and 5200? 4) Merc gasket and some other sealant? 5) Something completely different? Also, with either of these methods what are the torque specs on a #3/#4 transom stud configuration? Thanks for the help.

Are you talking bravo?
With the fat o-ring type seal?

Nope, #4 Speedmasters. They have probably a 1/4" cork style gasket that sandwiches between the transom and the outer transom plate/gimbal housing.

Re: Transom Inner/Outer Assembly Method

The gasket is "supposed" to be enough to seal it. But on old transoms with soft spots, warpage, etc you never know. So I use some generic silicon. 5200 is kind of overkill, it's almost impossible to get off if you ever have to remove it again.
I've got the torque specs at home for SSM. But 30 ft/lbs rings a bell.
If I can remember, I'll double check tonight.

I agree 5200 is hard to clean off and work with. But, I have seen to many rotted transoms from using the cheap silicone or nothing at all. Go with the 5200, its burly and with stand many years in service

Good Luck,
Jack

I'd use 4200 so they would be removable. 5200 is pretty much permanent.
