Minumum Oil Temp
 

How hot do you guys get your oil before givin it.I instaled a temp gauge at the filter (before cooler)and even with the stock cooler it took a long time at slow planing speed to get the temp up.Now with my larger cooler it is even worse.I also cant believe how fast the oil cools when you shut the boat down.The closed cooling will stay at temp for an hour but the oil will cool off in 5 minutes.I try to run it under 3000 rpm until I get 180 degrees on the gauge but this is pan temp not after cooler temp.It usualy takes about 5 minutes at this speed to get to 180.Once I give her a bit it warms to 210 pretty fast.I broke the the motor in with straight 30 weight and have stuck with it due to consistant oil pressure even after a hard run.

Even with running thermostatically controlled coolers my oil temp takes quite a while for temp to register on gauges (160 - 320 degrees) . My normal warm up time is around 10 minutes ( 6 mph zone ) until running the engines up . Temp will start to climb after running 3000 for several minutes and stabilize @ 210 -220 degrees.Most oil pumps will by-pass oil when cold to bleed off excess pressure.

Super Flow doesn't recommend loading an engine for a pull until temp is 180 degrees.

Chris--I like the way you think. I went on record on an oil related thread here to the effect that I don't go on plane until oil temp has stabilized. I have a 30 minute chug to get to Lake Ontario which does it. Went out today. Water temp about 67*. It took 20 minutes to get to 180*. I've got the 800SC's and with a hard run see 210-215. Today, it was an Eliminator cat that temporarily interrupted my run to get gas. I'm still trying to get over spending $2.79/gal to the tune of $480 bucks.--Lou

I am fortunate in that in the position I am, we get input from the top engine builders in the country. Take that with the R&D we do with the powers of be in Detroit I get good input on the negatives of making power and the positives of making power.

Hi. I don't have the big money engines, but don't you want about 215F to keep the moisture out?

Yes, 212, boiling is what you want, but it was my assumption that he was asking at intial startup, how long before you can throttle her up on power. Kinda like running in the morning, you don't do a full wind sprint as soon as you get outside.. . .you gotta warm up.
