TRS lower gimbal pin/bearing-how hard?
 

So the new boat has loose lower gimbal pins on the TRS's. How much work and $$$ am I looking at? It looks like there is a pin in there but does anything else get damaged when they start to move (between 1/4" and 1/2") and are there any other parts I definitely will need to do the job?

Are you talking about the lower pin on the gimble ring? In other words, if you grab your drive and lift up on it does it move up and down? I have this problem on my stbd drive. I've heard you can cut through the bottom, install a new bushing and put a stainless steel plate under it to cover it and hold it in. Or buy a new gimble ring from BAM.

And we have the classic $64,000 question! :eek: IF you are real lucky, the cotter pin and the swivel pin will come out with no problem. But otherwise..... only time will tell. Most likely you will need the swivel pin, cotter pin, new bearing for the gimbal ring, and a couple new seals. Worst case scenario is that the swivel pin loosened up in the gimbal housing and has the holes hogged out.
Verify the play is in the bearing and not the housing. A loose swivel pin is easy to spot.

It is a PITA!!! I have to do one on my boat as well. You have to take off the drive, take off, loosen the tiller arm, get that cotter pin out and then drive out that pin. Then you have to Drop the top pin out and the gimball will come out. You have to be carefull pressing in the new bearing. The hardest part is USSUALLY getting the tiller arm out, and that cotter pin.

Hey Audiofn (or anyone), what do you mean "Drive out that pin"? It is threaded isn't it? (#25 in pic)

I'm having a ***** of a time getting mine to budge... any tricks??

Are you talking about the lower pin that is labeled 25 or 26 in your picture (hard to read the numbers). If so then no it is not threaded in. The slot is there so that you can allign the cotter pin, not to thread it in. You will likely have to heat it up a bit and then drive it out. You want to be carefull not to break those tabs that hold it in place.

Actually we are in the middle of this deal right now. It is fairly easy to get the lower pin out if you have a ball joint press. We just used the proper size press head and the pin pressed out-even with the cotter pin rusted in there, just sheared it away. I already drilled the sides of the gimbals to access the steering arm bolt but now we are going to have to wait on the slide hammer adapter from BAM to get the upper pin out-why is there always another special tool???? :mad: Anyway if you know anyone in the auto repair business they will probably have a ball joint press and you can use it for the lower pin.

Use a air chisel and some heat. Drive it up and out. Do it that way everytime.Make sure to get cotter pin out or as much as you can.
