Bravo One Repair
Just got a call from my mechanic and after a quote (verbal) of a max $2,100 for repair of the upper end of the drive, he tells me that he found three teeth broken and the cost will be $3,000. I was told $2,100 was reasonable but coming back at $3k, I am questioning it.
I see rebuilts on the web for $3,500 and gear-sets for $300 or less. Tips please. This is the first repair I have ever had to have done to my boat in four years! |
Re: Bravo One Repair
I've seen alot of good drives from respectable OSO members here for sale for between 2500, and 3000.00 if it were me I'd wait and find one. Don't tell that to the mechanic though because he'll charge you extra .WTF.

Re: Bravo One Repair
That is what I thought. I just spoke to another mechanic whom I trust, he said that The parts were more like $12-1300 and the labor 7-8 hours. The original guy was quoting $1,000 just for labor! Double what my other connection was quoting.
Looks like I'll be out the door under $2k with the second guy, Campbell Boats of Havasu. |
Re: Bravo One Repair
$3000 is entirely too much for a standard Bravo rebuild. $3900 well get you a brand new one(no trade) with warranty.
I bought one in 2002 for $3495 (new) from Marine Power Services in NJ. |
Re: Bravo One Repair
Someone on the board was selling them brand new in the box for 3,300.00. Do a search.

Re: Bravo One Repair
The upper gears and clutches and new bearings and races that come with the update kit for and older Bravo last summer cost me $1100. You would also need the input gear so 12-1300 for parts. and I was charged 300 for aasembly. I had a clutch weld up so I didn't need both cases washed out like you would need. but I think $3000 is a bit much.

Re: Bravo One Repair
If you were to have all new beargings and gears and have it setup properly, then it could get that high. But th $1k for labor is a bit much..
There is reassemble and there is proper setup or blueprinting and proper shimming of the gears. If you have a light boat, small hp.. reassemble will be good enough. If you have power, it it recommended by all the upgrade people to setup the upper gears like the lowers are setup.. Merc's latest technique follows this theory.. |
Re: Bravo One Repair
He may have been installing new u-joints and gimbal bearing or even a bellows while he was at it. That would be a good idea as long as it is down.

Re: Bravo One Repair
Bravo Drives are not cheap to rebuild & with limited warranties afterward. Your best bet is to simply bolt on a new one & be done with it, in about an hours time. Sell the remaining good parts on OSO to help pay for the new one. They do have some value. I have a new, in the box, standard Bravo One Drive, 1.5:1 ratio, Full Mercruiser One Year Factory Warranty, available for $3,300.00. I can even work with you on the shipping cost. Give me a call, at home, @ 954-564-0751 anytime. Thanks, Ed
