How bad is this, Valves and exhaust posts?
3 Attachment(s)
My riser gaskets were leaking and salt water dripped down to the valves. What needs to be done?

Re: How bad is this, Valves and exhaust posts?
I would first try putting some new riser gaskets on and see how it runs. If it seems OK you might want to do a compression test and or a leakdown test to verify if the valves are sealing. If it runs bad or the tests show leakage you'll need to pull the head and get it fixed. Depending on the damage a valve grind might be all you need or you may need valves and seats. Think postive and try running it first, though. It may be OK or if not perfect, may get you through this season. Then you can fix it right this winter. Good luck.

Thanks. Take a close look at pic #3, it looks off center.
I'm changing the exhaust because the water passage is badly corroded on the manifold. I'd like to get it fixed now while everything is apart. |
Re: How bad is this, Valves and exhaust posts?
What about the actual valves???? Is there any pitting or just surface rust. If there is no pitting, you should be fine. Do a leak down to make sure.
I had the same thing happen with my Gils and one valve was badly pitted. I rolled the dice, change exhaust and ran it all last Summer. It held up fine. I did replace all the exhaust valves this Spring. |
Re: How bad is this, Valves and exhaust posts?
Pic 3 loks like the valve may be bent or the guide itself. It also looks like the cast itself is wearing thin from corrosion right around the bottom of the guide. Had that problem last spring and had to change the heads. Is it #4?

Re: How bad is this, Valves and exhaust posts?
Picture 3 looks like the exhaust port that has the EGR passage in it. That is what that hole behind the valve guide is I think. A little rust would not cause the valve guide to move. Unless a valve spring is broken I doubt if the valve is bent.

Re: How bad is this, Valves and exhaust posts?
Motor runs fine, but blows blue smoke at start up and at idle. It clears out above idle speed. Does not seem to smoke underway.

I would do a compression and leakdown test. you really cant tell just by looking at it. If all the tests seem good. Fix the risers. See how it runs. The smoke might possibly be from bad valve seals.
