Shot Gimbals
Hey, I am looking for a little help/advice here.
My boat developed a vibration getting on plane. Come to find out my gimbal rings are worn out. These are 1988 vintage bravo-1's. I am running the 525 SC's. The shop highly recommends replacing with the HP gimbal rings. It's a big job, but they can do it with out pulling the motors. Do you think this is a good idea, expensive but... and how is the ring changed with the motors still installed? Thanks. |
Re: Shot Gimbals
ok...the cut two holes in the transom ass. to access the nut(s).
do you have external steering?? you should! |

Re: Shot Gimbals
I agree, pull the motors. I replaced mine 2 years ago and there was no way I was gonna drill two big holes in my gimbal assy. So, I decided to take on the big job of pulling my motor myself. Turns out, it's not a big job at all! I could not believe how easy it was to pull the motor. A 525SC may be a little more difficult but it can't be that much worse.
Audacity is right, you'll probably find something else wrong when the motors are out and be thankful you did. I found a couple of little things. I'm gonna pull the motor every 2 years just to check everything out from now on. |
Re: Shot Gimbals
Might thing about replacing the couplers while it is out...

Re: Shot Gimbals
I would definitely upgrade to the HP gimbles. I broke a standard one, at 80mph and it is not good. Too long a story for here.
I have removed the transom assembly without fully pulling the motor, but it is a lot of work. I would pull the motors, and as everyone has said, you will find more. If they are 88 vintage, you might look at repacing the whole transom assembly. Sounds like a good project... if your up to it, instead of paying the shop.. good luck.. we have all (alot of us) been where you are now. |
