Removing exhuast grime from the transom
I must be running a little rich - have exhaust soot on and under the swim platform that will not come off with simple green and a light scrub brush. Does anyone have a good solution?

Go to Home Depot and buy a spray bottle of Zep 505. I just did my whole transom with paper towels while it was on the trailer. I was impressed! It cleans the soot instantly and it wipes off to to nice shine. No streaks. Works good on the drive, too.

Flitz works well too.

Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
I always say to spray on "Fantastik" and leave it on for 3-5 minutes and then soap and water and a sponge. It's the easiest way everyone tells me!

I use mean green , my wife picks it up at the dollar store, we use it on every thing. NOT SIMPLE GREEN, MEAN GREEN.

Maybe if you guys would wash and wax your boat more than once a year it would come off with the whipe of a finger like mine, i dont know maybe baja has good gel coat but all i do is take a damp towl and whipe it right off.

Just be thankful the transom grime isn't on the bow. |
Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
Yep....lack of wax causes that. Use a good cleaner wax to get it all off. Then just keep it waxed. Mine comes right off with a light solution of boat soap and a sponge. I 2nd that. Here's what I found to be the easiest. I use simple green for the most part but as you mentioned you need something a little stronger to get the "stain" out of it. I wax my boat pretty often and mine runs a little rich on startup so I have the same type problem. If I don't wax the entire boat...I make sure to wax just the entire transom each trip. It'll save you some elbow grease and be a heck of a lot easier at the end of the day. As mentioned....all it takes is a damp towel and it'll come right off. |
Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
I am a true believer in Ring-Go but on the transom soot I have, it did not completely take it off. I have TERRIBLE transom soot on the Baja.Boat Shield works like a charm. You rub it on and you can see the soot coming right off. It goes on easy and comes off easy. It will also work on your rub rail and make it white like new. I have never seen my swim platform as white as it is after I use Boat Shield. I have noticed that it deflects the soot from forming too. It is a great product and you can order it from OSO. You should check it out!

Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
White Lightning takes it off easy . Also gets the white chock off the drives. For anything that still won't disolve use On AND OFF, BUT WEAR GLOVES.

Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
Waxing Frenzy! will not only remove the soot, it will make it easier to wipe off in the future; usually with just a damp rag.

Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
Star brite black streak remover works great and won't remove the wax.

Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
Soft Scrub W/ bleach.

Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
Have you tried Mr Clean Magic Eraser? - easy, non-corrosive and non- toxic. for harder stains on Fiberglass try Sno-Bol toilet cleaner but do not get on skin or painted surfaces Youch!

Vinegar, put in spray bottle. Spray on, wait a little bit then wipe off. It is also good for getting the Lake Travis water spots off.

Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
I second Mag502num...Soft Scrub with or without bleach. Both work great!
I had a yellow, almost tarnish-looking coating on the transom that I couldn't get out with most cleaners or FSR. Tried Soft Scrub, a 'lil "wax on wax off" and turned out white as ever. On another note, West Marine has a product called, Black Streak remover. Killer ****! Had these bugs or spiders that oozed little black tar-like spots on my boat. Tried Soft Scrub, rubbing compound, FSR...thought I was going to have to live with it. Tried the Black Streak remover and took it right out. ...with my luck, it was probably a $12 bottle of bleach and water but it worked. |
Re: Removing exhuast grime from the transom
My '66 Shelby GT350 was midnight blue with white stripes and after a week of driving/racing the stripes at the rear were a light gray. Fantastic was the only product I could find that would clean it. It also took the wax off at the same time. I religiously washed and waxed it weekly.
I'd say try Fantastic and see what happens. |
